No.

Many schools have requirements as to the timing of the USMLE exams that are specific to the school.....

error: syntax

At my school you must take the USMLE Step 1 prior to staring 3rd year clerkships, but you begin the clerkships before the scores come back. If it turns out that you have not passed they pull you out of your clerkships and you must re-take the exam before resuming the 3rd year (as far as I know this did not happen to anyone in my class). Whether this is a matter of law or is a policy of the medical school never mattered to me because a) I had no plans to fail and b) I had no plans of trying a different medical school. I cannot speak for the content of any malpractice agreements or legal statutes governing this matter but I also fail to see why it matters -- do you plan on failing USMLE Step 1?

It's not a law. For one, in the past, scores would not come back until students were already doing rotations. Secondly, this year the exam will be computerized and students have the option of taking it when they choose (within a certain time period). Many students will begin rotations before even taking it, let alone getting scores back.

it is not a law. hopkins students routinely take step 1 during their third year. it is up to the school you attend when you need to take it.

It is a rule at most schools.
