Is this a myth? Asking current students to e-mail dean of school/admissions to advocate for an applicant

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Title says it all. A lot of people are telling me that certain schools take student input seriously.
Schools want recommendations from your professors, mentors or employers, not from family & friends.

If someone I knew and respected vouched for someone that would mean a lot to me. I know that has happened for others at my school. But I have no idea how much weight it held and how common this is.

Also my school is not exactly competitive.

Who's asking? We take student input seriously, especially once they meet the applicant during interview days. We especially take the "creepy" impressions seriously.

Student input IS valuable, hence student interviews. However, we are forbidden from interviewing applicants we know personally. I imagine the spirit of the rule against conflict of interest would extend to unsolicited opinions to adcom.
