Find a job in Los Angeles that will pay me 350K for 16 shifts/month
Request only nocturnist schedule and only Monday-Thursday.

In reality, my question is regarding the schedule. Would EM groups allow one to tailor their schedule to only working Monday-Thursday overnights since generally people don't like working overnights? Is 300K+ doable in SoCal if one works as a nocturnist and 16 shifts/month?

Maybe, maybe not.

A friend of mine took a nocturnist job in Northern California making about that much, but I don't think he picks to work just weekdays (though I could be wrong). While you might be able to get some extra leverage on your schedule by offering to do all nights, you might not have that much leverage. I'd certainly expect at least some weekend nights at most jobs. Certainly at most of the places I'd actually want to work. You might get additional leverage by taking on a core faculty position at a residency program or serving in some additional administrative role.

Also, 16 shifts/month of 8 hour shifts (32 hours/week) is about average for a full time ED doc. 16 shifts/month of 12 hour shifts (48 hours/week) is way too much to be sustainable for long.

Yup. Absolutely. I work full time nights, Sun - Wed set schedule. Wife also works same nights. Groups should pay you a premium, allow for prioritized scheduling, and get your ass home in the morning. You're doing everyone a huge favor. Nights aren't for everyone...

I am not sure they will give you the same night stipend if you get just weekdays. But I am sure they would do it at rate. I know I wouldn't give much of a stipend for night if it didn't include weekend.

I have the inverse question. Is it possible to agree to work every weekend and holiday in order to minimize night shifts to <3 a month?

One of my partners does only nights Monday-Thursday (every weekend off), pay is about 240k/year (academic) in the Rust Belt (not SoCal). She does fewer than 16 shifts a month however.

So at least one part of your query I can corroborate: yes you can find a job with no weekends if you are all nights.

The question is can you do that job? Monday-Tuesday tend to be the hardest shift, nights are harder than days in some ways, and 16 12hr shifts a month is a pretty heavy load for EM. I know it doesn't seem that way now, but when you do some work in the pit, these caveats will make more sense.

240k / yr working 192 nocturnal hours a month might just be the worst job in EM. To the OP, if anyone offers you this, run far far away. To RoyBasch, this makes absolutely no sense. Hope you're joking. Or something...

Agree with bikERdoc. I can only assume you mistyped and meant 16 EIGHT hour shifts a month. If this person is doing 16 TWELVE hour night shifts a month for 240k/yr, they are an absolute *****.

With regards to my partner's setup: The shifts are 8s, not sure how many a month exactly, I think they do 12, might be less.

When I said 16 12s I was referring to the OPs hypothetical work situation, and thus I said that will be more difficult to actually work/execute than the OP imagines.

Weekendist is the most unstable position in EM. I’ve never seen someone last more than a couple of months. It’s brutal on your social life and relationships. That being said I’m sure there’s somebody that’s done it for decades and loves it...

Why would you agree to this? I get half my weekends and holidays off and work an average of 2-3 nights/month. Some months I have 4-5 nights, some months I have none. Don't give up something you don't need to.

Yup. This would be the worst. I would laugh at that contract on my way out the door.

At 240K / yr...

-16 shifts x 12 hrs = $104 / hr = beyond terrible. "I can't even" level of terrible. Does this job even exist?
-16 shifts x 8 hrs = $156 / hr = Better but still pretty terrible. This is a bit higher than what I was paid as a resident to babysit a sleepy urgent care.
-12 shifts x 8 hrs = $208/hr. I would say this is bordering on "pretty good" considering this is academic Cali, especially if you are W2 w benefits. I'd take this rate to have residents do all my work for me.

Yeah, I can't see this being sustainable. Even though days of the week are pretty much meaningless to me at this point, too many people in my life are on the usual M-F type work schedule.

I worked Saturday and Sunday day, and Monday overnight (all 12s), by choice, for 2 years at my first job out of residency (busy group in SC). Since I was kind of (?) a tool, my social life wasn't so severely affected.
