1) your school is outer-state friendly
2) Your MCAT and GPA are within my range
3) You guys have a strong infectious disease program and I am intersted in ID in the future
4) Great research opportunity

I wouldn't mention the first two.

Like Mongrel, I wouldn't mention the first two reasons, but reasons 3 and 4 are ok.

My advice is to look at each school's mission statement and then demonstrate how their mission statement fits with your future goals as a physician.

Talking about my strong belief in Jesuit philosophy is good for catholic schools like NYMC, Georgetown and Creighton?

Because schools don't just want people to apply because they think they can get in, they want people to apply because they have a genuine interest in the school. Thus the latter two responses would be okay but the first two probably get your application into the shredder.

The shredder would be too good for that kind of application. Maybe the dumpster if it's lucky.

Is that something truly important to you or are you just trying to say what you think they want to hear? If the latter, then scrap that idea fast. Tons of people get rejected trying to say things they mistakenly think schools want to hear rather than focusing on their true strengths.

so, the answer to this question is that important? waht if u dont have a good reason?

Imagine the med school is a girl in whose bed you want to spend the night. Now you're not going to tell her that the only reason you're interested in her is because she's the only thing you can bed given your pronounced limp, that growth on the back of your neck that sort of looks like a hump and your lowly position as the ringer of bells. When else fails, bull****. If you have any luck, you might just get laid, uh....I mean admitted.

haha, i guess..... for most of us, it's the same thing in our heads
"hey baby, you are hot, let's go"
"hey med school, you are highly ranked, let's go"
and if we say those out loud, we will get our butts whooped

" yo baby girl, I want only you. your research opportunities make me flutter on the inside"

Great ways to answer "Why our school?":

1. I'm not top-tier matieral. Neither are you.
2. You're an in state school for me.
3. I'm applying to every accredited school.
4. You have the cheapest OOS tuition.
5. No other schools sent me a secondary.

Hmmmm.....lets see how that applies to me......
1. I'm not top-tier material. Neither are you. (Wayne State, Ponce, EVMS, UPR, Brown, Indiana, Albany, Meharry, Howard, Tulane, VCU, Drexel, Jefferson, Morehouse, NYMC, RFU, AECOM, Mount Sinai, ETSU, Marshall, and basically every DO program)
2. You're an in state school for me. (Wayne State, MSUCHM, MSUCOM, UMich)
3. I'm applying to every accredited school. (N/A, but I am planning (despite a good GPA and (hopefully) a good MCAT) on applying to basically the bottom 20 MD programs and like 5 I would sell my fiancee for parts in order to attend )
4. You have the cheapest OOS tuition. (not sure....haven't looked at that yet)
5. No other schools sent me a secondary. (N/A yet)

I agree with the other posters-- don't mention the first two; it makes you sound like you picked them solely because you thought you had a shot at them and not because you thought that they had a strong program or because you would be a good fit for them.

When I was answering these dreaded, "Why X school" questions, I would generally go back to the school's website and look to see what the school stressed as their strengths, look at the school's history, curriculum, etc., and then focus my answer around that. Note: you will need to keep a copy of every secondary that you write to the school so that if you interview there you will know what you wrote.

So you might mention that you admire their long history of an outstanding reputation, that you like the fact that you get early clinical experience, that you feel their curriculum is a good fit for your learning style, etc.

You're definitely on the right track 👍

If you are really truthful about WHY you want to attend their school I think it will show and will work for your benefit.

I truly hate answering the way our school questions. Ugh cornell!
