Hey guys! So I'm starting to fill out the applications for 2016 and have a question as far as "experiences" goes. So during the summer I work for a government program called IRIS where I work with kids with disabilities, specifically down syndrome. This takes place in the participants home, which I stay at during a full week (Mon-Fri). Most of my duties are taking them to appointments, physical activities (swimming, soccer, basketball, etc.), and general hygiene care. My question is, does this count as "healthcare experience" or non-healthcare employment?

My gut would say non-healthcare. It seems more on the side of (no offense meant) "baby sitting" than clinical work. Clinical work would generally be considered something that involved working with patients in a clinical setting. Since the kids are not patients of yours, and you're not assisting in the delivery of healthcare to them (aside from driving them to appointments), healthcare seems a bit of stretch.

Definitely a cool experience IMO and something to include. But healthcare it does not seem.

Alright, that's how I was feeling about it as well but thought I'd get another opinion. Thanks!

AACOMAS Instructions describe it as: "Both paid and unpaid work in the health or a health-related field where you are not directly or indirectly responsible for a patient’s care".

It sounds health-related similar to a personal care aide, which is listed as a BLS healthcare field.
