I just got off the phone with a school and asked when I might receive an update to my waitlist status and was told that the school doesn't even consider waitlisted candidates until april after they're done with all of their interviews. Is that how most waitlists work? I had assumed a pre-december waitlisted student would be considered prior to post december interviews but perhaps I misunderstood what being on the waitlist meant?

What school was that? Im on 3 waitlists myself and one of the school told me predec waitlist has priority over post dec interviewers.

If they are still interviewing and are putting people on waitlist already it means they are seeing if they can get anyone better.

But no every school does things differently. It's specific to each school.

No that is not how all schools work. Some waitlist everyone that was not given an offer the first time around. Some waitlist and wait for better candidates like Likkriue said.

Some people have weird waitlist stories (UIC had one a year or 2 ago). There was a student who was waitlisted on a day and then the next day was accepted.

That's very interesting. I suppose I'll just wait until April then and see what happens.

I've read that ~200 students are placed on a waitlist for NYU. Does anyone have an idea of how many students will be accepted from the waitlist? Are they ranked in any form?

Where did you get that number? Just curious

From my own experience last cycle and from the number of interviewees I've seen in the mornings, I believe that number is an underestimate. From what I've been told by admissions, the admissions staff continually holds meetings to decide on the next batch of acceptances. I have been told that there is no numerical ranking and I have no evidence to the contrary. The number accepted off the waitlist vastly varies from year to year (which I believe is the case for all schools).

In regards to the original query by @MOLARSITY ; different schools have different policies. For a high applicant volume school like NYU, it isn't surprising if it has a considerable number of highly valued applicants scheduled for interviews both before and after December just purely based off application timeline or other considerations. While having a pre-December interview means one will be considered earlier (which is the advantage), it does not necessarily mean that pre-December interviewees are given stronger consideration over post-December interviewees.

April is the time where you need to pick one school or else the curtain goes up on your multiple held seats.
