I have a couple deposits due in mid November, but I am waitlisted at the school I really want to attend.

Significant other thinks I should send an email to the admissions director of the waitlisted school, explaining the situation (deposits due on X date). The point would be to reaffirm my interest in the school but also ask whether there will be movement on my application (from waitlist to acceptance) by the date my deposits are due at other schools.

However, something about it seems tacky to me … thoughts?

Some schools will tell you when they start taking students off the waitlist. Oftentimes it’s early May. Try to find information about that beforehand if you really want to send an email. As for putting down the deposits, you can only go to one school, so trim the fat and pick one of the schools that you would seriously consider attending—especially if you don’t get off the WL for the school you want to go to (which I hope you will).

As for whether or not it’s “tacky”, I mean it wouldn’t be too far off from sending a letter of intent that you would want to go there if accepted.
