I'm working in a cognitive neuroscience lab this summer and its going very well. The college I'm working at is on my list of graduate programs I want to apply to. The problem is that the professor I'm working with won't be accepting a student when I apply. Would it be in bad taste to apply to the program anyway and ask to work with another professor? I think the professor I'm working for currently would understand (I hope) but would it look unfavorably in the admissions process?

If f I did that i'd certainly network with the prof(s) i'd name as POIs prior to applying and gauge their interest. I'd also spend extra space in my SOP articulating how my experiences in my current professors lab helped me know what a great fit I (i.e. my interests/goals) am/are for the program. Lastly and probably most important, i'd discuss my plans with the prof i was working with and ask their advice. :luck:

Thank you for your reply 🙂
I will talk to my current professor about it, I was just wondering if this is any sort of abnormal practice. I always hear about all the politics in academia and I don't want to do something that looks bad.

As long as you have an academic reason for applying under the new prof, no one will question it. No one will get their feelings hurt.
