This is my second time applying to medical school (I withdrew my application in 1999 and retook the MCATs). One of my family friends got her BS (in 1998 or 1999), and decided not to go to med school and then got her MS (worked with dept of health and all that),she changed her mind....took the mcats and is now applying with me this year. She applied later than me and now has two acceptances already from schools and I am still sitting here green in envy. The first acceptance she got she called my family and they made a big ol' hooplah about it and I sat there feeling pretty stupid (especially when I only had two interviews and nobody has called me back). I mean I am happy for her but COME ON MAN...I wanted this all along and here she comes snagging not one but two acceptances like it was no big deal. SHe didn't do to great on her exam not over 30, but she got higher scores than me. I admit the higher scores she got and the fact that she went to ivy league schools for her BS and MS all count but I can't help feeling jealous and pissed at my misfortune. What is up with that! I am looking the fool here people!
To add insult to injury, I was studying for the exam with this other gurl with a 3.1 GPA and all along she kept complaining about how hard the exam is how she is not even studying and maybe she wouldn't take the april exam.....why did she bust out a 30....didn't study my "ass"ets. No one gets a 30 by making good guesses. She has no EC's and her school never sent out her letters of recommendations,she applied late Oct/Nov....why is she having 5 interviews, one was at an IVY school and also one at my state school that is not showing me any luv (even though I live 5 mins away!). I am trying not to be a hate the players but hate the game but it is SOOOOO hard.

I sympathise with you on your friend calling your parents! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT? I hate how people call friends' parents and try to get the whole family excited. Meanwhile, you sit there like an ass while they're thinking, "What the hell is wrong with you? See, your friend is getting in here and there, while you're on your ass getting rejected." I had this happen to some friends of mine... this one guy was acting like a big shot telling people's parent he got into Princeton undergrad. Truth was he was just sent a recruiting letter (for sports) and he ended up going to a Cal State school. (not to rag on Cal State, but it's certainly not Princeton). IDIOTS!

I totally sympathize with you. I know this one girl who did pretty ****ty on her MCATs, had one single interview, and got in whereas I had multiple interviews and did not receive any acceptances.

Sometimes they're just lucky and **** happens. The worst thing is if they gloat over it. Honestly, I think that if you get into med school without overcoming some kind of difficulty, you really cannot grasp how fortunate you are to be studying medicine. And, as a result, you may take your education for granted, look down upon others, etc. Of course, this is not the case, but I am speaking from my own experiences of people who got in easily by fluke.

You got it right on the money with this quote. When my family friend called about her acceptance she spoke to my (stupid)sister who came to announce it to the family, while we were ALL sitting in the living room watching TV. I think my SISTER could have been more sensitive and not have made an annuoncement out of it. Then my even stupider 9 year BROTHER says loudly " When are you going to get into medical school.....(my name)....it's about time, whats taking u so long?" Can you F'ing believing this. My ears were sooo HOT! Then MY MOTHER goes "oh that gurl....(my friend friend) is soo brilliant I knew she could do it." As I can't do it! These people have no faith in me MAN! I was soo HURT by the way they put me on the spot in front of everyone (my cousins, uncle, aunt,siblings were all there)I couldn't leave the room and I couldn't say anything to combat the triple insult I just received,I sat there trying to hold back the HOT tears stinging my eyes. I actually laugh when I think about it now, but it's not funny! 😡

I feel for you Mellow. Hang in there! My situation is a little different since I have gotten in a couple of places but my family and co-workers have brushed that little fact aside and continually ask me, "so have you heard from Harvard and Yale yet????"

I understand where you are coming from Mellow! I work with this person who keeps asking me if I have heard anything about medical school yet. The thing is that I work in a hospital and the person ALWAYS asks this question when a doctor comes around! Sometimes, she will ask the same question 2 or 3 times a shift and I am beginning to believe that she does it just to make me look stupid. I finally responded to her last night by saying that I did not quite understand this situation because with an MCAT of 40, I would have thought I would have heard something by now. I don't have an MCAT of 40 (wish I did), but I sure had some doctor's mouths dropping! Plus the person mouthing off only made herself look even worse by saying "You mean you did not even get half the questions right and you are applying to medical school?" I thought that one of the doctors was going to choke while trying to keep from laughing. You guys just have to know this person. She is the type that tries to make herself look superior at the rest of our expenses and I am getting sick and tired of it. I hope that I very subtly put her in her place.

This waiting is so frustrating and from looking at the postings on this board, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to this admissions process. I just wish that someone would either let me in or let me know if I am going to be rejected.

Man, parents/family always know how to make you feel better, huh? 🙄 The first time I applied to dental schools, I got a letter from Univ. of the Pacific and after I opened it, my mom looks at me and says, "good or bad news?"...I'm like "MOM, I never had an interview there! Have I recently flew to San Fran? NO! Of course it's bad news"...

Sorry about your siblings not helping, but they probably don't know any better...good luck to you 🙂

I feel your pain...my cousin goes to Columbia med and I've only been invited to 2 interviews....my grandmother, after talking to my aunt and uncle, constantly calls me up to ask me if there's any news......it makes me so mad....if there were good news, don't you think I would let everyone know? 😡

knew what they were doing with their lives like "PERSON X" had gone to medical school years ago, straight out of college, whereas his poor offspring oldernotwiser was 14 years out of college and STILL couldn't get through the pre-reqs ha ha ha (like I had been trying that entire time...which I hadn't).

SO...I turned to the group and told them I couldn't help it if I was stupid - it was genetic evidently - but look how much I had achieved given the genes I had to work with!

don't get me wrong, I love my family, but I am very much in favor of calling people on their sh#t...

Mellow, don't listen to the braggarts. They are often the ones who end up discontent in life. What matters is that you did your best now and can only do better. Hang in there.

She went to two Ivy's, and has higher scores plus she has an MA (you made it sound as though you didn't). She's going to get more love from schools than you. That much should be expected.

However if she's going to be a c*nt about it and call YOUR family bragging about how she got in..then she's got issues. IF she was really your friend then she would respect YOUR feelings and not rub her acceptances in your face. That's the main issue here.

The other girl got a 30 on the mcat and said that she guessed. Well guess what? It's entirely possible. No she didn't guess on the whole exam...but maybe she did make good guesses after narrowing things down to two choices. I'm not even going to begin to tell you how many questions I had to make educated guesses on during my MCAT...(and I got over a 30).

I believe the MCAT has a standard deviation of 2. So maybe her score should really be at a 28...but she just got lucky. It happens.

By the way...what are your scores and stuff? It's hard to guage your chances, or give you any useful advice without knowing them.

It's no secret that my family friend (with higher Mcats, ivy league degrees....blah blah blah) has a better chance of getting into medical than I do but you don't have to rub it in my face.....well she didn't rub it in my face...leave that to my SISTER. I actually saw this girl this weekend and she didn't brag about it to me, so I blame my sister for the whole incident. After speaking with her and she told her story (with the interviews and all)I feel kinda relieved, I am now happy for her, I guess she deserves it...(but so do I).
As for the other girl who got a 30 (and claimed she didn't study) well I still don't buy that UCLA2000. You know how someone claims they don't know something and they get a 70 and someone else can make the same claim and gets an 85? Well that's how I feel here (I am the 70 🙁 ). I am not hating on her (YES I AM, YES I AM :wink: ) but I feel deceived here, if you know the **** just say so, don't try to ask slick. I was actually tutoring her "ass"et for the exam.......while I was tutoring her, she was busy SUCKING OUT MY BRAIN JUICE ALL ALONG! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" />

I think just about everyone here feels your pain. We all are pissed at relatives that keep asking if we've heard anything, and friends and associates that have already been accepted. But I've got to correct you about the MCAT score and studying correlation. I did not prepare at all -- not even one practice test, nor one review session -- and I got a 36 on my first try. Yes, I'm a lucky sonofab!tch, and believe me I know it. I know other people who did likewise. Some people are just good at standardized tests, for some unexplainable reason. It doesn't mean anything. And believe me, I can tell you that having a "good" MCAT score doesn't not mean you'll get acceptances right and left. I've had 4 interviews, but no acceptances yet (no rejections either, just silence).

i have to agree...you can really get a high MCAT score without studying. I did not study at all. I can't even read. English is not my first language and I am dyslexic in my native tongue (although this was not diagnosed until last week because as I mentioned earlier I can't read!). I actually only took the test because I needed directions to the local Piggly-Wiggly but was mistaken for a test taker and the rest is history: 38 S. Who can top that?

Mellow, your friend who "didn't study" is fibbin' big time. We had these in bike-racing too. Whenever these chicks won a race, they'd stand around and talk about how they stayed up -'til 4 am drinking the night before (yeah right--I shared a hotel room with you, babe! You ate spagetti and were in bed by eight!) Some people just gotta rub it in, even if it means a fib--good luck to you, and don't sweat the mind games too much.

Life sucks huh mellow. i've been through it myself in very similar ways. i think that situation occurs, more or less in the same way, to many of us applicants. this is my second time applying, and when i think about last year, or when i feel crappy about this year i just try to realize that no matter how many curveballs are thrown at me, i will never be beaten. it's an entire lifetime. that's what you've got. and if you're competitive and determined enough, nobody can stop you from succeeding in whatever way you want to succeed. if you don't get into a school here, consider that there's always a "sure thing" for applicants like us that are pretty good. it's st. george's, and the education is better than it is at many US schools. if you work hard, you'll get a residency in the US, and so on and so forth. don't let your mood alter your character. even if you feel crappy about "here and now" just think about your potential, and what you can accomplish. stop thinking small picture. things may not come for you like they've come for your friend. but in time you can get there too, and your experience will be something you probably won't want to forget or wouldn't trade in even if you could. THAT IS...if you make it WORTH IT. whether or not you can make it worth it, will be decided by your character. be strong soldier!

Mellow, I felt exactly the same as you earlier in the season. I knew someone who studied with me for the MCATs. We were both from the same state but she was an undergraduate at Cornell and I was at a state school. She had a slightly lower MCAT score and a lower GPA. We both did mock interviews with another guy, and none of us had any glaring weaknesses. She got in my state school rather quickly, while I was waitlisted (you already know what school this is).
