i had my work edited (NOT WRITTEN) by an editor and hes blackmailing me now.

what happened was i sent him my statement to be edited and the version he sent back was not even close to what i wanted to convey. he chopped off a whole paragraph and made sentences short and they didnt flow properly. the essence of my essay was gone and i was left with this impersonal statement. so i emailed him to address these issues and he claims to not have gotten them. And then he disappeared for sabbath which was the day my statement was due. i didnt use his revised statement, i used my original work with minir revisions instead. he came back from sabbath and is now demanding i pay him for his time. i refused because what he revised was useless. he ruined what i had written.

So i submitted my work yesterday and today he posted on his blog the version i sent him. should i be worried? hes claiming to have written it from scratch which is not possible because its a personal statement. But im still worried because im still in the process of applying. does time acct for anything? i submitted my statement yesterday and hes posting it on bis blog today.

hes basically blackmailing me. threatening me that hell call the school even though ive paid him for his services. i gave him properly written work to edit. also, i didnt use my real name when i was communicating with him. so his blog enteries dont have my real name.

what should i do? should i pay him? i dont want to give in to his bullying.

The answer is: no, it is not plagiarism on your part. On his, yes.

First off, breathe because you will be winning this. Second, gather all the evidence in your favor. If you paid him, there should be some kind of time stamp somewhere: bank, receipt, etc. He will not be able to blackmail you on that. Third, if you did the original work and submitted the original work, your computer should have another time stamp of when the file was made, edited and even sent to the person. Fourth, if you can afford an attorney or your parents can, a situation like this could easily solve itself with a cease an desist letter where a decent attorney will outline the things I said and possibly more that I can't think of. Do not communicate with this person ever again if you're going the attorney way. If you can't pay an attorney, do not engage by threatening legal action because the last thing you want is being called on a bluff. Finally, for the love of god, don't pay this clown. That is nearly an admission of guilt.

What to do in the meantime? Make it clear to this person that you do not negotiate with blackmail. Ask them politely to please remove all work before there is an escalation of events. Do not define escalation. Cease communication after this. There is a chance he's bluffing. As for schools, you will need to flirt with the idea of exposing the problem to them, but if the guy doesn't even know where you're applying or when, it may not be necessary.

"He said, she said", and no school will listen to his claims.

Next time, ask your friends to do the editing.

The lowlife observes the sabbath. Hilarious.

Yes, keep the evidence. But I doubt anyone will run turnitin on your PS.

First of all, learn how to spell plagiarism. Second, you're not at fault so don't worry. But I agree with Goro, only let someone edit your essays if you truly trust them. Maybe you have some friends who are English majors?
