From what I understand, it seems that when you apply early decision, you are not allowed to apply to any other schools making you wait to October 1 to hand in your supplemental applications for your other choices. Is this true? If so, doesn't this seem alittle late and in long run actually hurt your chances? Moreover, when applying to your state school for early decision would you guys say it is more difficult or about the same to gain an acceptance? Thanks a lot 🙂

i see that you've written a few messages about this.

i don't know for sure about the dates, but early decision is a bad option because it forces you to be VERY late with every other application--basically significantly hurting your chances everywhere in exchange for one school. and believe me, how soon you apply makes a big difference.

just apply regularly, and send a letter to the school, and in the first paragraph, say that the school is absolutely your top choice, and that if accepted you will go. it's better to do this around january or after you interview. that will accomplish 75% of what you want in early decision (letting the school know of your overriding interest) but without the huge downside.

good luck! 🙂

The usefulness of early decision depends on your school and your stats. The University of Wisconsin admits only the most outstanding students via ED and tries to keep a number of spaces open for students who apply later but still meet the deadline. Medical College of Wisconsin admits qualified students ED (no special, higher standards) and does rolling admissions. Try to find out how things are done at the school that interests you and take a good look at your own application package before you decide what to do.

It depends on why you want to apply ED. If you are absolutely positive this is school you want to attend, then ED may be the best option. The school knows, if accepted you will be coming in the fall, which I am sure many AdComs view positively. I know that Medical College of Georgia accepts a large number of ED students every year. Some of these students have lower MCAT and GPA than the average regular decision applicant. Each school is unique, so you may want to poke around and look for statistics as to how many students are accepted each year ED. -- Now, the rule for ED is all ED applicants must be notified by 10/1. At this time, if you were rejected, your file will rollover into regular admission at that particular school(don't have to pay to reapply regular decision) and you are released to apply to other programs. 10/1 is later in the process, however, many deadlines are not until November-December for AMCAS. -- My advice: If you are absolutely sure this where you want to attend school, then consider the EDP. If there is any doubt, go ahead and submit your AMCAS early regular decision.
