Please don't quote—reposting here after I initially posted in the wrong spot.

Current, non-trad applicant here. I spent birth-18 in state X, but I have not been a resident there for 3+ years and am now OOS there. I am a current resident/IS for State Y. I have completed secondaries for the State X and State Y schools. Recently, a close family member in State X was diagnosed with a disease that, while not a guaranteed death sentence, is pretty life-altering. As such, the University of X is looking a lot more attractive to me. I was wondering if this would be worth an update, even though I have not received interviews from the State X schools.

So to paraphrase: Would it be helpful to update schools that a close family member in that state was recently diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease?

No, this is not worth an update. When you have something actually update-worthy (a new publication, or a new semester of grades esp. in someone trying to show a continued upward trend, etc.), you can reiterate then that you have a tightknit support network and other personal reasons for why you would want to return to state X. Just my thoughts.

Got II's yet from either school? Do you want to give a school a reason to think your life will be upended and you won't really be ready to dive into medical school... go ahead. That said, I hope everything is okay given the circumstances, and you should probably assess whether you can handle medical school if things progress towards the worst.

To expound upon my earlier brief response--you just don't know what your life will look like in 9 months. Sadly, your family member could die by then. They could be through the worst of whatever they are dealing with. Regardless, I would not make a life altering decision based on this new information. If things are still looking grim in 9 months, this is precisely the kind of situation where a deferral may make sense.
