I think the main thing is that you are genuinely coming from a long distance and that the schools accept ITA requests. You can check out this thread (although I don't know its accuracy): "In the area" Email Compendium

Hello! So I was fortunate enough to receive an interview invite to a NYC school recently and wanted to let other schools that are receptive (Columbia, Cornell, Sinai, Einstein when I'm complete) that I am going to be traveling to New York for a week in September (staying longer than usual for some family stuff too). How should I go about writing the email?

I was planning to write that I'll be in New York from X date to Y date, that I live and go to school in another far away city (I can name the city I guess). I would also write that , but if I am fortunate enough to get one, that I would prefer it in the above time period to save on travel costs, etc. Then I would finish it off with a little statement saying I would still be glad to travel back to the area in order to attend an interview if the school chooses to invite me for an interview at a different time.

Should I mention the interview at the other NYC school? Should I name it? Let me know what you guys think!

Its is reasonable to write and also to be open honest. I would mention the "in the NY area" (Fortune is not the best word but I cant quite get the right one). I would open with this

I will be traveling from CITY to NYC the week of DATE where I have had the god fortune to be invited to an interview (i would not mention the school name). I understand that every applicant cannot get an interview but with the expense of travel and the cost of time to undergraduate student, if THEIR SCHOOL will be giving my application further consideration, I humbly ask that .......
