Financially it's a difficult hole to climb out of. And with different research coming out to cure S. Mutans along with increasing oversaturation, who knows how long demand for dentist can last and whether that demand can supplement your loan debt and overall ability to care for your family. It's important to do something you love, but tell me who has ever taken out astronomical loans purely to do something they loved with no economic returns

Do you have any publications to back up the claim of generalized over saturation of dentists? In popular cities, yes dentists are saturated but where they are needed the most, they are absent. Every single peptide research that shows promising results in specifically eliminating S. mutans will be marketed as a mouthwash. We already have preventative cures against caries with brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. People who tend to get caries are the ones who don't brush, floss, or rinse with mouthwash. If they don't have the habits right now, who's to say that they will develop them once the specifically targeted antimicrobial peptides are in the market? They will not be much better off in five years than they are now.
No matter how much debt you accumulate while in school, you can always pay them off by joining the military. People here also speculate that the education bubble is just like the housing bubble and that sooner than later, it will burst.

If you become the best of the best, there will always be a demand for you.

OP: Repeat after me....

"It's the economy, stupid."

The angst of the poor economy has people second guess everything. Kobe, you're relatively new to dental school why not drop out? Why throw good money after bad?

The end is near, my friends. You would be wise to retreat now. My triumphant reign is nigh.

😉 You're all hype. Not one journal publication. You know something's fishy when one of so claimed 'creator' of Keep32 is a business MBA who was once employed McDonald's and the other doesn't have any substantial dental-related paper published. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Jose Cordova
Notice how all the articles on Keep32 are by popular magazines.
It is not normal for respectable researchers to place such high claims without any real study. No MIC assay, no OD growth curve, no biofilm assay, and no clinical studies. :bullcrap:

Considering the original post & the emergence of the poster "keep32" I'm thinking this whole thread is a trolling thread. Thread lockdown?

So S. mutans is the only bug that causes dental problems? Lol

And with different research coming out to cure S. Mutans

As a dental student, you should know that S. Mutans are the bacteria not the disease. No such thing as "curing" a bacteria. You can fight it, but there'll always be those resistant strains that'll grow back. Bacteria, no matter how much you fight, are bound to grow back. As long as you feed, they'll be there.

Why is this a trolling thread?

I am not here to argue the future value of dentists but Planet Biotechnology is developing CaroRX a product that if successful will definitely reduce caries. It is an antibody for S. Mutans that is in Phase II clinical trials under FDA supervision. However, this company is not trying to destroy dentists. This product is designed to be administered only by dentists and hygienists every six months.

I showed my dentists this and he said he was just waiting for the day that this happened, he knew it would come. So on that note, you should all withdraw your applications to dental school and apply to medical school.

I agree with the last part: everyone withdraw your apps! Dentistry is a complete trap/disaster, and a really bad decision. You'd all be wise to get out while you still can 😉

The post seems emotional and worded in a way to cause panic/fear. It has little substance and doesn't seem very objective.

The OP could be serious or, more likely, trying to get a significant out of everyone and begin a debate about the likelihood of a rampant disease process being irradiated via medicine.

Would it be trolling for me to go on the pharm or medical thread and say:

"AI / automation will take your jobs in the future - get out now - It's bad for you in the future. We're all going to be in debt and jobless!!!"

Why is this a trolling thread?

I think this is an advanced strategy being implemented by pre-dental gunners that specialize in fear/demoralization tactics. Hanoi Hannah much?

😉🙂

successful troll is successful.

General Ackbar thinks it is. Sorry guys, I couldn't help myself.

+1

There is so much truth to this statement! It is proven science that brushing and flossing prevent caries, yet dentists still exist and are in high demand. This is because the majority of the public has fairly bad oral hygiene.

The mouthwash product that destroys S. Mutans will benefit those who already have good hygiene habits. However, those who do not have the habits already, will not automatically start using the product, just like they already don't brush or floss.

I question the veracity of "Keep32" as well especially considering its coverage. For such a monumental discovery I would expect the stories to be recurring in the news and not just from early July, I would also the expect the coverage from the differing news sites to be more different.
