Well it's been a long year of post Bach. I've never made a chances thread but since I'm about to apply, I could use some advice, as long as its honest:

I graduated November 2011 with a 2.9 sgpa and 3.185 cgpa. After a year of 8 retakes and tacking on organic for the first time, my stats have increased : in 2 weeks school is over and I'm killing it this quarter so I'm counting what my GPA will be as of 2 weeks from now lol.

SGPA: 3.72
CGPA: 3.6 something
MCAT: I scored a fricken 22 on a practice AAMC test, but I have not had a good schedule dud to school. I was supposed to take 5/30 but will probably take 7/13. The difference will be that I finish school 5/13 or 14 and I won't have another class until 2nd summer( which I'm only taking 1 more class for the loans so I can study all day from 5/15 until my mcat. I have good verbal scores, so I should be able to up the sciences and increase the composite to closer to my goal: 32!

ALpha epsilon delta " pre med fraternity"
Kinesiology fraternity: I list these because I have small activities that I may mention on primary. Nothing huge.

I have about 220 hours of direct patient contact( some outpatient and some inpatient physical therapy as an intern requirement for undergrad) literally picking up the patient and setting them to rest on their beds. I guess that's direct.

Tons of physician shadowing:
International shadowing opthalmologist in brazil
Shadowed my pediatrician lol
Shadowed my brother who is a surgeon. MD

Currently shadowing a FP MD and and ortho surg DO

DO letter
MD letter
Pre med committee letter ( even though I'm a non trad)
If needed, I can get my kinesiology professor to write a LOR( thoughts?)

I have some small volunteer but not enough in my eyes.

Well that's about it: I know it's a long winded post but in order for you to assess me I needed to be honest about the things I plan to use on my primary.

Short term plans?
Finish strong in these last 2 weeks of school.
Finish primary and submit to 1 school ( apparently that's the way to do it)
Study all day until MCAT on 7/13( hopefully not too late 🙁
Take micro so that I won't have to forfeit those loans. Lol
** fill out secondaries if they come.. Wait in paranoia with my SDN brethren.

I'm a Louisiana resident so UNT-TCOM is my dreamer school. Hopefully I get there. Any thoughts and tips are so greatly appreciated. I am pretty sure I am going to be one hell of a doctor. I am so excited to find out what med school brings.

Every single thing about you/your EC's seems EXCELLENT and better than a lot of applicants. Get 24 (bare minimum) on the MCAT (preferably 25+), and you are a shoe in.

Thanks a lot. So you think the July 13 is okay?

Be sure to submit your application well ahead of time without the MCAT score so that it will be verified by Aug 13 when your score comes in. That way you will be able to get your score submitted quickly and be on your way. Looking at being submitted fully by mid-late August in that case.

If your MCAT comes back 25/26+ (I like your goals, aim high) you will be golden for a DO acceptance. If it comes 28+ you will probably have your pick of DO schools. Strong GPAs and a good post-bac performance will also impress. Go rock that MCAT.

Yea I'm totally going to submit my primary June 1. Hopefully my hibernation studying will be beastly. Thanks for the response

so if i get a certain score and submit immediately, i have a nice chance at early acceptance?

also, i posted in OP that tcom was my first choice, but per someone's post here on SDN, the texas system does not do grade replacement..so that sucks! There's no way I can get in TCOM with my original grades...thats very disappointing because I have some family in Dallas...

Damn, I think I messed up my transcript on AAMCOMAS....I had a class as a retake that I didn't retake, so my cgpa that i stated in OP is wrong...the correction should be:

SGPA: 3.71
CGPA: 3.56

hope that doesn't screw me too bad !

As requested. 🙂

I agree with what the others have said - get a good MCAT score and you're looking great. Write a good PS and have lots of people review it. After your MCAT, shift into pre-writing secondary essays so you can have most or all of them done by the time your score comes back. Being complete in mid-August isn't bad at all.

If needed, I can get my kinesiology professor to write a LOR( thoughts?)
Some schools require a committee letter and a science faculty letter. Get it if you're applying to one of those schools.

Good luck!

wjs010,

Congrats on the huge improvement! If you don't mind me asking, did you do a formal or an informal Post Bacc?

if by formal you mean apply for a post bacc then no..I'm informal..I basically just knew I had to make up a bunch of c's..I even turned two b's into A's, which is kinda tedious, but it needed to be done. Along with that, and taking organic, which I didnt retake, because I had never taken it before, and that's about it. I would have rather taken higher level bios and even biochem, but in order to be competitive, I needed to just boost my GPA.
