...someone wakes up and realizes opening a pharmacy school isn't a license to print money. There may still be hope....

hmm...i dunno, i think is just a reflection of the current economy, not necessarily the start of a trend. Donations are down nationwide AND the inability to get credit would keep any construction projects delayed/on the ground, so it would make sense to delay to protect the institution.

the demand by students is there (as evidenced by people paying $40k for a private/stand alone in CA)...the issue in the article was start up cost.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard from someone who heard from someone who is established at a non candidate school that the aacp is tightening the belt in some way. That is all I am willing to say.

I don't see how an established school like univ of dallas could not get the funds to open an obvious money maker like a pharmacy school.

hmm...that sounds like a good thing then!

but i do understand why a big institution like that would want to put any extra construction/expansion projects on hold in the meantime. you don't want to be like those buildings in vegas and get stuck halfway and have a situation where you need some liquidity in another part of your company/university.

yeah, they also delayed a Kansas school from expanding its program.
Yes, but KU's situation is slightly different. Despite what others say, there is still a shortage of pharmacists in Kansas...About 31 counties in the state do not have a pharmacy. Another 30 or so have only one. Last year, rural pharmacies were closing because they could not attract pharmacists. Once they graduated from KU, most pharmacists preferred to work in the bigger cities. The expansion would have opened a branch of KU's pharmacy school in Wichita, just like the med school. Of course, there wasn't enough money.

Yeah I don't know if its credible, but I think the aacp knows what they are doing, I think, possibly, who knows. PM me if you're interested. More strict and difficult to obtain standards should keep crappy institutions from popping up.

Should also keep out a lot of the riff raff applicants.

I know the first surge in requirements came sometime after the HICP scandal which required minimum funding requirements, schools to start in pre-accred status vs. applying directly to candidate after opening a school, and the "exit plan" should an institution fail.

Wonder what the next round of requirements are...I imagine if they're too onerous, schools could complain/sue.

The LCME and AMA have managed to keep a pretty tight clamp on medical schools opening, I don't see why ACPE can't do the same.

I'd think that the only legal case one could make is a claim of monopoly, but it seems like there would already have been a corresponding case over in the medical field.
