Honestly how many of you are in it for the money? I know I am...that why I chose medicine...it's expensive. Yeah, you get to help people...but they pay you a fat load o' cash to do it. C'mon guys be honest and say it with me...Show me da money!!!

Medicine will provide a comfortable lifestyle and job security, but when all is said and done, you make sh*tty pay relative to your investment of time. Chemical engineers with a BS will have more wealth by the age of 60 than a doctor will, and their job will likely be less stressful and have better hours.

If you're doing it for the money, you're not terribly informed. There are easier and better ways of making money. I have a friend in Pharmaceutical sales that is make more money than most doctors. He only has an undergraduate degree too. Get an MBA from Wharton.

I agree with other posters that the ROI in medicine is not great. If you want just the money, consider I-banking or consulting. Within two years, I was already making 6 figures and no debt to boot. However, there are many intangibles in medicine that neither of these fields can give you.

but the pure ROI people already are becoming lawyers. the medical field offers ROI+QOL (obviously depending on specialty, and on the assumption that you enjoy it more than the alternative pointless boring job, i.e. IB). i always roll my eyes at the people who insist that only the self-sacrificing mother theresa's should go into medicine. there are plenty of people who do it because it's a comfortable lifestyle and mentally stimulating/rewarding work, but wouldn't still do it if they hit the lottery tomorrow. and no, there's nothing wrong with that, contrary to the beliefs of many 20 year old premeds.

It seems to me though that becoming a physician is an almost guaranteed way of making good money. The way the job market and economy swing puts people who are in i-banking and computer engineers at a big risk. plus, these jobs often times suck!

One of the physicians I work with told me that if he had the chance to "do it over again," he would've become a pharmacist. Malpractice insurance premiums are ridiculus, and people seem to have a penchant for suing doctors, lately. If you want to become a doctor simply for the Benjies, you'll regret it, even if become nicely compensated. Financially, you could make a great living as a drug rep - without the headaches that doctors face (not to mention that you'll get a free car, with free gas).
Now, if you have other, motivational incentives to become a doctor besides $$$ (e.g. taking an active role in someone's healing process), then pursue medicine by all means. You'll live comfortably while doing something you enjoy.
