So Im only 2 rotations into my 3rd year, but Im a non-trad that has worked in healthcare for a while, and I am 99.9% sure I will be going into anesthesia. I spent some time with a CA-1 in between rotations, significant time on my only free weekend, and I absolutely loved it. I stayed through 8 cases and for 15 hours straight and went back for more hurting during the week after my next blocks orientation! I didnt "shadow" in the sense I was actually able to do pretty much everything.

I noticed that I am definitely a more hands on person, and talking to people in rounds and putting in orders is just not my thing.

I have never been happier doing anything in my life than I was those days and from what I hear lots of students like many fields but if your lucky, one of them you wont be able to live without doing; I think Ive found it.

I know about all the political problems and uncertainty and I am completely fine with them, as others say on this board, I am going in with my eyes wide open. 🙂

Welcome to the Brotherhood.

Somewhere during med school there is a divergence of paths.

The nice people go toward anesthesia and all the rest don't.

I couldn't imagine doing anything but anesthesia.

Epic fail and one of the worst mistakes you'll ever make. You'll see...

That's great but KEEP YOUR MIND OPEN as an MS3.

+1

If you can keep an open mind with each rotation, you will inherently put more effort in and get more out of it. Doesn't mean you can't have favorites, just shelf that thought till you are on that rotation.

Also helps get you more teaching out of your superiors if you are interested in their field, not to mention the occasional higher evaluation never hurt.

MS4 here so take it FWIW but that's the approach I found to be the best.

My family doctor is a nice guy. My Radiologist buddy is nice as well. I've met my share of malignant Anesthesiologists over my career

Nice people go into all branches of medicine except perhaps Cardiothoracic surgery. 😉
