There seems to be not many threads on IU in recent years. Just curious on what everyone's thoughts were on this school.

Personally, as an (almost) IU alumnus I have been very impressed with the optometry school (as well as the rest of the university) and it's one of my top choices. Bloomington is a beautiful town and there's always something going on at the university.

The only major drawback that people always say about it is the location. It's very much a university town and once you leave it's cornfields for an hour in each direction until you reach another city. However, if you come from a background similar to that (like I did), then it's no problem at all.

I interviewed there and really enjoyed the city, campus, and faculty. The vision research is the best for any optometric school. The clinic is new and they offer a lot of different externship options. What I don't understand is why it seems that not many applicants apply there. I feel like I may be missing something....

The reason a lot of IU students don't apply is because a) they aren't aware of its existence (it's not located in a prominent area of campus like the business and music schools) b) almost every science major here wants to attend medical school c) the other majority of students attend the business school or music school and d) they want to leave the state by any means necessary (lol).

I'm interested in applying here but because my parents are iffy about the possibility of me studying in the States, I'm stuck haha.

^IU, for the most part, is a very safe campus (obviously, if you are out at 3AM and drunk your likelihood of getting into trouble increases as it would anywhere). They keep it well-lit and have plenty of night bus/shuttle services to get you where you need to go (we have one of the largest bus systems in the state). They also have a very well-staffed PD and, unfortunately, parking enforcement (trust me, if you bring a car here you will get a ticket and it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when').

lol oh I know 🙂 I'm not doubting how safe the school is. But since I've never been far away from home, even in university, the thought of me possibly moving from Canada to the US to study makes my parents a bit reluctant. I'm only an hour drive away from them now and they still call me everyday. Imagine if I'm a plane ride away! :\
Right now I'm still considering options if I don't get into the Canadian schools and pursuing a master's is one of my plans. Kind of brings this back to my post about master's.

I can see that about instate students, or students that attended undergrad there. What I am unsure about is why are out of state pre optometry students not applying to that school in particular. If you look at the 2017 acceptances, the amount that got interviews to IU are low, which could be assumed that they didn't apply to that school, since their stats were high. Those that did, decided on not attending the school. This is a curious trend. I was just wondering if anybody had any insight on the cause.
