Hi all,

I will be applying to IUP, and wondering if anybody has any feedback about the school and/or area. I am applying to both PhD and PsyD programs, and although I feel that a PsyD is the best choice for my career goals, I cannot fathom the debt. IUP seems to be very well funded, and so this has quickly moved up on my list of schools. However, I am a city girl...and well, Indiana PA? This seems like the absolute middle of NO WHERE. In looking at the money I'd be saving, I could probably adjust. Does anybody have any feedback?

Thanks!

From what I've heard, if I understand correctly, it's not what I would personally consider well funded. I think the stipend worked out to $400/mo, hopefully someone can come along and clarify if that's incorrect.

From what I have heard/read, they offer a full tuition waiver. This is what interests me. Almost no PsyD programs offer this. I am not concerned with the stipend, as I can either just pick up a part time job or use loans for cost of living.

I visited IUP once. A friend spent a summer there (he is an international student - they have some sort of English immersion program they run at the school), and we were driving through on our way to Pittsburgh so we stopped for an hour.

As a city person myself, I could not personally handle living there. There is like NOTHING around. Pittsburgh is the closest city, and it is (I think) an hour or so drive away. There were like maybe 15 restaraunts/bars in the vicinity (including the usual fast food ones), and basically very little else. Lots of trees & green grass if your into that, though!

However, you are going to school for an education. I would just question what sort of opportunities you will have to work with diverse clients in a setting like that (I don't know much about the immediate area, though, so you should investigate that more).

If you are looking for a Psyd that is located at a less competitive school but is funded, I know of one in NJ at Kean University. It sounds similar to the one at IUP, in that it provides a tuition waiver & small stipend (I heard from my friend who applied that it pays about $4000 or so for the year).

Kean, at least, is in Union NJ about a 20 or 25 minute train ride to NYC. Of course its a trade off---that $4000 will not go nearly as far as the same amount at IUP due to the high cost of living in the NJ/NYC area.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, but I don't think Kean is APA accred, and it is actually a combined school and clinical program. This would not be a good fit for me.

If you're looking for funded PsyD programs, I believe Baylor and Regent both offer funding as well. I know Baylor offers full funding, not sure about Regent.

Hey there! I'm currently a second year at IUP and have a 1/2 time, 20 hour/week assistantship so I have full tuition remission and a small stipend, although they are somewhat difficult to come by. The majority of people have a 1/4 time, 10hr/week assistantship with a smaller stipend, but in comparison to the majority of PsyD programs out there the school is extremely cheap. I'm very happy with my decision to come here and really like the program.

If you're from the city, you might be unhappy here - the closest city is about 45 minutes away. Although there are two city girls in my cohort, one from LA and one from NYC, and they both seem to be doing fine 🙂

If you have any specific questions you'd like to ask, send me a message - I'd be happy to answer them for you!
