Just curious, are there any schools out there that teach IV sedations in dental school? I've heard USC and a few other programs have some sort of program set up...I'm just curious how these programs work, what's the legality behind being certified in IV seds (is it # of hours, or specific classes, etc???). Thanks

I know Creighton does, but Im don't know the details of the requirements.

in GA there is course work and 25 cases to get certificate. never seen the students doing it, only residents (OS and GPR) and other dmd/dds's doing CE.

At Stony Brook, undergrads can observe sedation cases. The residency director for the dental anesthesia program is often there and is very open to people shadowing his private practice. I think their program is like 3 years, so they get a lot of experience and medical background. So far the only people I've seen involved in the cases are pediatric residents and their attending and anesthesia residents and their attending. More stuff probably goes down at the hospital, but I haven't seen that yet.

At Creighton, you get to do the surgery on sedation patients, but the OS inserts the line and pushes the drugs.

At Pitt, you can take electives during your 3rd/4th year to get IV sedation certified. They do a lot of work with our Patients with Special Needs department.
