I've having a difficult time learning RR Path... please help

I've been reading Rapid Review Path for a couple of weeks now but I can't seen to retain anything. There is sooo much information... bullet point after bullet point. It's quite overwhelming. Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone have any advice on how one can go about learning this?

a) Focus on the sections with blue margin notes (that means reading the blue margin notes and then reading the corresponding sections)

b) choose your battles when you start a table (e.g. I am going to learn these 6 organisms cold now, not all 30 yet)

c) some people like listening to his audio while reading the book and making notes.

From my experience, Goljan RR is structured very much like Robbin's Path (the big book). I'm not saying that you should read Robbins now but if there is anything that is not clear in Goljan, you should refer to the corresponding section in Robbin's. If you have not read Robbin's before, it's actually pretty easy to understand and well-written.

I would highly recommend not touching Robbins if RR is already too detailed. Plus that damn book will hurt your back.

I think RR is a great read cover to cover only if you have very solid fundamentals. If you are finding it overwhelming, you might try BRS Phys and turning to RR only when you want more details/pathophysiology, etc.

During classes I always found Robbins to be a much easier read right before exams after I've mastered the core material. Maybe it might be worth going back to RR after you're done your once-through, to fill in the details. It might also give you time to listen to his audios, which also make the reading easier, IMO

The audios and RR go extremely well together. The audios are important since he explains alot of the 'simple' pathophys that you really need to understand. Not that RR doesn't cover the pathophys, but its really the way that Goljan emphasizes things (e.g. why the ristocetin cofactor assay is important in diagnosing vW disease)

Guys, my pathology foundation is very weak, and this worries me since the Step 1/medicine is basically pathology.

I bought the RR book since I heard so many great things about it. If I borrow an acquaintence's goljan audio, do you think these two will help me understand path?

Any recommendations for me if, for example, while I'm reading RR and I don't understand something I'm reading?

my personal experience is that it's good to have a foundation in path before listening to goljan b/c he ties a lot of the pieces together, so if you don't understand a concept in the first place, you might not get the FULL benefits from his audio.

however, i think, without a doubt, that you will learn from his audio lectures. He is an excellent teacher and explains concepts well. IMHO, you can't go wrong with goljan.

had EXACTLY the same problem -> switched to BRS Path. Later dropped BRS Path and focused on FA only. I took the test today and almost everything could be answered with FA. However, if you have time, look at all the pics in RR path (life savers) and maybe the side notes.

The first run-through is always very tough, but the 2nd one will fly by even faster, and the 3rd will be even faster still. This book is way too important to not read more than once.

ive just started reading the RR. ive actually done my first read (with other resources) already and this makes the book much much easier to handle. but it still take a very long time since im also doing 100 usmle world questions and FA. i never really believed other people when they said this book is good, but it really is. and to get the full benefit, it's very important to be done with ur first read or have a solid background. i have six more weeks to go.
