So I've finally reached that point in my career that every EP dreads. It's more frightening than burnout, more annoying than the LLSA and as unstoppable as a URI in wintertime. I have run out of room on my bookshelf for more Annals. I hate to toss the older ones but how often do I go back and pick out an old edition and thumb through it? Never. I think I'm just going to keep the most recent 3 years and dump the older ones. I may only keep 2 years worh of my NAEMSP journals. That's a different issue.

I throw every issue out after I read it. Can't you get it on-line?

My wife still has a few years of old issues squirrelled away in the basement that she is afraid to part with. I sneak a few out to the dumpster whenever I can

Hey if you're throwing out old journals, I would be happy to give them a good home..... 🙂

as someone who has several piles of rags, mags, paper, etc on the floor surrounding my desk....and more importantly, as the offspring of a father who grew up in the depression era and never throws anything away --> i recommend online archiving. 👍 👍

When we moved back to Temple after med school, I made the incredibly painful decision to part ways with 19 years of JEMS (an EMS mag).

I knew they were accumulating to no effect but could bring myself to part with them. Fortunately, I'd learned my lesson so I only kept enough Annals and JAMAs to prop up my TV and the rest went in the trash.

I was going through the large pile of book boxes in my garage (who says those things are for cars?) and came across another couple of large JEMS boxes. Those things will never go away.

Take care,
Jeff

I toss them after I read them. It is easier to look up the topic of interest on-line, download the pdf, and print it as needed....Easier than trying to remember which year/month that "interesting article" was in, then thumbing through 10yrs worth of old journals. Just makes you feel more depressed when you realize that the "interesting article" that you thought was only a few months back turns out to be 2 or 3 years back......

Funny! I do the same thing...My wife also seems to keep PILES of old shopping bags laying around. I have to sneak these out as well...

I love finding old stuff like that because it's like a medical history review. 16 slice CT scanners, IVPs for kidney stones, IV Dilantin protocols. I just tossed an old PediWheel (which is a little cheat sheet type thing for pedi emergencies) that had bretylium on it.

BTW PediWheels are cool:

during my year off before med school, i worked in a lab that had backissues of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy dating back to 1974. those things were older than i was.

My wife does this too! I have started adding a couple to the trash whenever I take it out.

Gentlemen, the real challenge is to keep these shopping bags from accumulating in the first place! 🙂

Take care,
Jeff
