Hello

Quick question regarding travelling to the US on a J1 visa.

J1s are allowed a maximum of one month to enter the US prior to their program start date. My question is whether orientation start is considered the start or not since it is 20 days before the actual start of residency.

What is written on your Offer letter or Contract is your considered start date. What is written on your DS-2019 would be the one to surely follow

Not your question but since these orientations are often unpaid I find this so egregious to make it so early.

Enclosed is your House Staff Office agreement for First Year Categorical Resident (PGY-I) in the Department of Internal Medicine from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.

Thats what it says on my contract but I do have other documents stating that orientation date is on June 20 including a schedule for that. I guess I’ll see what the ds-2019 says.
Thanks for your help

i think you need to see the DS-2019.. J1 can enter 30 days prior to your start date so you can enter the US without problem 30 days before July 1. which would totally ideal. since, it will take 10 days after checking in with your coordinator to apply for an SSN.
