A letter was just published in JAMA responding to an article published a few months back on MSTP training. This comment is from graduates of a MSTP program and they propose that NIH loan repayment may be a better idea (at least for NIH) than all the funding that goes to MSTP programs. The main reason they argue is the "delayed realization" of earning potential with MSTP programs.
The authors of the original article respond with evidence suggesting that it takes everyone in research a long time to realize earning potential and there is not much difference in time between MD and MD/PHD researchers.
Not really any new ideas, but it is interesting to hear it from MSTP graduates. Any thoughts about this?
