The following narrative and accompanying tables describe selected 20-year trends in the number of doctor of medicine (MD)–granting medical schools, in student enrollment, and in educational program structure and delivery. The data were obtained from the 2024-2025 Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Annual Medical School Questionnaire-Part II. The questionnaire was sent in February 2025 to the deans of the 158 LCME-accredited medical schools with students enrolled in at least 1 year of the curriculum. The comparison data were from the 2004-2005 LCME Questionnaire-Part II, which was sent to the deans of the 125 LCME-accredited medical schools in February 2005. Each questionnaire had a response rate of 100%; attempts were made to verify the information and to obtain missing data.

During the academic calendar year 2024-2025, all directors of ACGME-accredited programs were asked to complete the program survey component of the National GME Census using GME Track. Information on the educational characteristics of the training programs is added to FREIDA (the AMA residency and fellowship database), which is a public resource on GME programs that is used by medical students, resident physicians, fellows, and their advisers. Starting in late July 2024, program directors were surveyed about their active, transferred, and graduated resident physicians and fellows for academic year 2024-2025.
