Hey all! Anyone start studying now for the January 2008 test? Seems weird that its only 6 months away... What are all of you doing to study?

Best of luck!

I'll post more later but I just finished AAMC 9. I thought it was okay. Did anyone have a problem with question 108 I think. Had to do with matching an answer structure to the question structure. I'll post more in a bit when I get home but I don't understand the answer. Good luck to everyone still taking!

Took AAMC 10 today! I am very, very happy... but i thought the test was a bit on the easy side--compared to others.

PS-12 VR-11 BS-12 (35)

and I was 1 question away from a 12 on VR giving me a 36. I am so happy cuz my verbal was ballin 2day and I was really focused even though I had not enough sleep today.

^ congrats man... AAMC 10 is supposed to be the closest to your score... good to know you peaked at the right time

Last practice test ever...

AAMC 4: 13 PS, 10 VR, 12 BS (35)
AAMC 5: 12 PS, no VR, 12 BS
AAMC 6: 12 PS, 12 VR, 12 BS (36)
Kaplan FL#7: 12 PS, 12 VR, 14 BS (38)
Kaplan FL #8: 12 PS, 13 VR, 13 BS (38)
AAMC 7: 15 PS, 12 VR, 11 BS (38)
AAMC 10: 14 PS, 9 VR, 13 BS (36)
AAMC 8: 13 PS, 10 VR, 10 BS (33)
AAMC 9: 14 PS, 11 VR, 13 BS (38)

Very happy... but this test made me feel VERY uncomfortable... especially BS... some of the discreets were pretty damn hard... and really, really odd... gonna be reviewing this one for a while... I missed 3 discreets

aah 4 days LEFT!

my dream score is a : 13 ps, 10 vr, 13 bs

I just finished AAMC 10 and I got my best score yet. I'm psyched, but I agree that I thought it was slightly on the easier side. I thought the verbal was much more doable than on AAMC 9. Heck, if AAMC 10 is more reflective of what I'll see on Saturday, I'm content :-D

So I took took AAMC 9 today... My score came out as a 34... I am pretty happy with it. PS-13 V-10 BS-11

I am especially happy with it because I normally score in the 11 to 13 range for Verbal, so I am feel pretty ready. I am really aiming for a 33 on the real deal. So heres to review and making it through the week!

Hey all. I am taking the test on the 26th & am having some problems. My BS & VR scores are consistently 10+, but my PS scores are fluctuating like crazy! I went from a 13 (AAMC 10) to a 6!!!! (AAMC 9) to a 9 (AAMC 8) & I still have 2 more to go. Has anyone else ever had a similar experience, or has anyone ever scored higher on test day than in practice? I know today when I was doing it & got the 9, I wasn't really "in" to it, & I know on test day I will be much more focused, but I don't know how much of a difference it will make. I really really want an 11 or above, & I thought I had it when I got that 13, but I guess not. If anyone had any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Basically what I meant to say. I just said it in a much more convoluted and boring way.

Good call on the AAMC making their own scoring criteria. I've always thought that it was a little screwed up to standardize something where people are taking two different tests.

actually an AAMC rep said that they make a curve that is still dependant on previous administrations.... probably disreets I'm assuming

Damn, that's good. I am going to take AAMC 10 on Wednesday and hope for the best. I'm sort of shutting down now. I'm trying to really brush up on physics with Hyperlearning=no good. I just can't keep focus anymore. I'm just reading the books and taking the test and if we do well, we'll host a party in Boston. 👍

Please give me what Bloody Surgeon got. I hope this break from FL will serve me well.

SPOILER ----- don't read if you haven't taken AAMC 9

1) I was wondering why high concentrations of sodium were included in the diasylate.... if everything was isotonic, wouldn't stuff NOT flow out of the the blood.. I don't get it... I thought you want stuff to flow out of the blood b/c a person undergoing dialysis has kidney failure

2) the sperm question... I tried drawing it out... I gave the initial chromosomes "3" sister chromatids instead of 2... since they replicated twice... I don't understand how to do this problem

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i had the same question about the isotonic solution after taking the test this morning. i talked to my kaplan teacher and this was her explanation. the solution is isotonic, referring to the osmotic pressure. however, when considering the force pulling water into the blood, its mainly the oncotic force (referring to protein concentration) and not the osmotic force (referring to ion concentration). so just because the solution is isotonic there will still be the oncotic pressure pulling water in.

I was just wondering what you guys are doing this last week to study. I just took AAMC 9 today and hit my highest score ever. Should I take anymore? I am contemplating taking AAMC 10 midweek, like wed. or thursday. Will I get burned out?

Here are my scores so far.
Test - PS, VR, BS - Total
KFL 1- 7, 11, 10 - 28
AAMC 4 - 10, 9, 13 - 32
KFL 2 - 13, 11, 14 - 38
AAMC5 - 11, 12, 11 - 34
KFL 3 - 13, 12, 14 - 39
AAMC 3 - 12, 12, 13 - 37
KFL 5 - 11, 10, 15 - 36
AAMC 6 - 11, 11, 13 - 35
AAMC 7 - 13, 13, 10 - 36
AAMC 8 - 12, 11, 13 - 36
KFL 7 - 11, 12, 14 - 37
AAMC 9 - 13, 13, 14 - 40

I feel there has been so much fluctuation and I am not sure how to control it. My test today went well, but I am worried it was a fluke. Any advice?

take a break so your head doesn't explode!
good luck -- take that test on Saturday and you'll be walkin' it out! (see video above)

Hey guys!

I can't believe the time has only come... I'm getting excited, and finally starting to feel ready!

I am contemplating wearing an absolutely ridiculous outfit to the test center. Like bright pants, silly shoes, and a lot of makeup? I think it would be quite entertaining, maybe help myself and others relax!!

Anyway, is anyone having trouble accessing their AAMC's today? It is *VERY* slow (not loading for me). I'm figuring lots of people are taking FLs today.. but I want to access my old ones.

Caffeine high is kicking in. Lets do this!

guys... is anyone reviewing all their review books completely one last time

I haven't done that in 2 months... I don't feel like doing it... do I really have to 🙁

No you totally don't have to, lol

I went through the official AAMC list of topics and put a star by any that I didn't feel like I knew really well. And of those I'm going back through the material to brush up on... Maybe you could do something similar?

Best of luck!

Seems like everyone killed AAMC 10 except for me, lol, made so many dumb errors (got straight 10s). argh... I hope i do better on test day. Might go check that topic list...

how was AAMC 7 everybody?

its my last practice test and I'm gonna take it tomorrow.

So happy.
Good to go!

happy wid dat.
Tomorrow 9 and Thurs 10.
Don't wanna peak too soon:laugh:

Took AAMC 9 today. Guess now is a good time to spike, Friday can't come soon enough. Hoping for anything not like Aug 20.

Hey everyone, I was wondering what all we had to bring to the test. I checked AAMC's website and it looks like all you need is your ID. What do you guys think? I was going to bring my registration confirmation as well.

Also, it looks like everyone is doing great on the practice tests! Very nice! Everyone keep it together and we'll all be killing this thing at the end of the week!

Just took AAMC 10 for my last practice test before friday. I got a 36. 12 PS, 10 VR, 14 BS. I actually thought that the verbal was a bit harder than usual. Anybody else think so?

wow I can't believe I'm getting confused with the basics 4 days before the test but....

a free energy diagram

energydiagram.gif

is supposed to represent Free Energy, Delta G right? I always looked at it as representing delta H (enthalpy) .. if the product is at a lower energy, the reaction is exothermic. Normally you can conclude that something is exo/endothermic just by looking at the graph.

But if it really is about "free energy," dont you have to take temperature and entropy into consideration to conclude whether a reaction is endo/exothermic?

I think it depends on how the y-axis is labeled. I've always seen it labeled "Rxn potential energy" or "delta G", so that's how I see it.

If it is labeled like that, in order to determine whether it's exo or endo, I would think you'd need more data.

you'd think so right? but in Kaplan and many other books... and even in college classes, we learned that if the product is at a lower energy, the reaction is exothermic :scared:

If that's a graph of the change in Gibb's Free Energy, ΔG, then it's different than the change in enthalpy, ΔH. You CANNOT tell if this is exothermic but you can tell that it is exergonic. Remember that Gibb's Free Energy is a function of both enthalpy and entropy, so it is possible that it is endothermic (ΔH is positive) but the entropy term is very large and positive as well (and at high temperature) making the overall change in Gibb's Free Energy negative.

ΔG = ΔH - TΔS... if ΔH is positive (endothermic), but the TΔS is positive AND bigger than ΔH, then it can have the graph you show there (where ΔG is negative) but still be endothermic. Hope this helps.

Turns out this is a combustion reaction, which is definitely exothermic, but you couldn't tell that just from the graph without any other outside knowledge.

BUT Gibb's Free Energy graphs don't look like that... so I have no idea what they're talking about  The enthalpy change graphs look like that.

Thanks for confirming!

So is "potential" energy supposed to mean enthalpy... or has Kaplan got it all wrong.. in Kaplan's book, the same reaction is given... with the same graph... only difference is that the y-axis says "Potential Energy" .. they conclude that the reaction is exothermic from that alone

I think they're wrong... unless pot. energy means enthalpy

potential energy is different. that means if the graph looks similar to above, the product is more stable than the reactant. In that case, there is a release of energy and therefore exothermic. hopes this clarifies

I have been getting straight 30 for the past 3 AAMC tests. How do you guys avoid making so many stupid errors?

I think I've found a trick. Write down and quickly summarize what you read for BS and PS passages. Stupid errors normally result from just not oging back to the passage and confirming, and the reason you might choose the wrong answer is because you don't remember the passage saying a certain thing when it did (at least that's the case for me). For BS, I tried writing down all the key points, and the strategy worked because it kept me attentive of everything (I scored an 80% on a Kaplan BS section test, which are absurdly hard).

But be quick about your notes. I had 5 minutes left when I tried this for BS section tests, so it worked for me. Try writing short quick notes on the key facts presented in the passage and write down the main words of a question in order to make sure you realize what you're answreing.

You shouldn't need the registration confirmation, but you can bring it if you want.

Yes, make sure to have your ID- preferably your driver's license, or a similar ID. Everything else- food, keys, wallets, cell phones, purses- will have to be stored in your locker for the duration of the test. You'll keep the key on you, and the lockers will be in view of the proctors the entire time.

good luck everyone, it's pretty much futile to study much more at this point. i'm gonna review this test and then watch some good movies. me and others have concluded that van wilder would be quite appropriate, since the premed in that movie is so ridiculous. plus van wilder is engaged to scarlett johansson in real life. props to him, stole my woman.

Last practice test, so siked. I will be very pleased if my actual score reflects my averages.

Agree with streetlight. Not doing much til the test. Eh maybe I'll read some of the kaplan essays, but not much more than that. Just going to be watching some movies and waiting intently for the beautiful beauty known as the MCAT to invite me over.

Just took AAMC #9. I have been getting straight 30 for the past four times now. I really dont know what is going on. It seems like this test doesn't truely reflect my understanding because when I go back to look at the errors, they are all stupid mistakes so I dont really learn anything new. I really need help with minimizing my errors.

Took my last practice test today... aamc 9
I'm not happy, but I can't say im sad at my results.

PS-11, VR-9, BS-10 (30)

I thought the PS was really easy (expected 14 really when I was done), VR not bad (just ran out of time at end), and then I was totally annihilated by BS. Man I dunno how I should spend my last day reviewing tomorrow. Should I just do BS passages or something? I need around 11-12 sciences and 9-10 on VR.

I haven't gone through the test but im pretty sure i just made silly mistakes for PS and VR... but I think I might have a critical problem with the BS from looking how others scored on this section.

Took my last practice today:

AAMC 9 - PS - 13 BS - 12. Didn't take VR since I feel myself burning out a little and want to stay fresh. Thought the two sections were pretty straight forward. Need to keep telling myself to reread the question after i mark my answer because sometimes in the middle of reasoning out my response i forget it is an EXCEPT or NOT question and pick the wrong one.

Question: How does everyone go over their answers at the end of the section when you have time left? I seem to have trouble with getting back into it. I usually have around 8 minutes left in PS and around 18 minutes left in BIO. I need some advice as to what to do with these times.

Also, I am taking some Kaplan sectional tests today b/c i heard the mcat was more like them and they are sooo much harder. Getting around 75% on all of them.

Hey Bloody, I also just took AAMC #9 and we got the same combined score. I have been getting flat 30 on the past 4 AAMC exams so I know how you feel when you think you should have scored higher. I hope we can overcome our errors on the real test day.
