Hey all,

Has anyone gotten into a school with a january mcat? I take it on jan 28 and get my score on feb 28.

I got a 494 on my september mcat and am retaking it in january. I have a pretty competitive gpa (3.65 cgpa and 3.5 sgpa), lots of volunteering both medical and non medical. My primary was submitted in july but I'm still waiting on some secondaries, so they will receive all my materials pretty late.

any success stories will give me lots of hope

If you got a high, well balanced MCAT score (506ish and above, I am not an expert though just guessing) I would at you definitely have a shot next cycle. As far as this cycle goes, it seems these schools are becoming more competitive than they used to be, so I think it may be tough sliding in that late. However, you may find a school that would accept you that late (provided the new MCAT was good). If there is no rush, then I would bank on doing well on the MCAT, and improving the application for next cycle. Then submit it as early as possible (June 1). I know it is hard to wait though, but sometimes pros and cons have to be weighed.

Do not get your hopes up for an acceptance this late. If I was you I probably wouldn't spend any more money this year as you are very unlikely to get in at this point. Your GPA is average btw, as far as I know.

One thing I must say, this is your second chance and I don't want to scare you but may be your last. If you get another 494 or so, it may be a med school killer. IF you are not consecutively getting around the score you want which should be at least a 506+(remember some schools literally balance out both Mcats), then I suggest YOU DO NOT TAKE IT until you are ready. DO NOT RUSH THIS, If you do badly again, it may be time for a career changer. Don't rush it and panic and screw up all your chances, rather be patient, wait until you are ready and scoring consecutively within the range and go for it.

Also it is very late for this cycle, you should wait for the next one. Do not rush the MCAT attempting to get into this cycle.

You most likely won't get in this cycle with a January MCAT. Most classes are full in February so your absolute best shot is to get a waitlist spot. September on its own was a very late MCAT.
Save the money and apply next cycle.

you're not competitive.. gpa is below average just like mine (3.58). we both need a 509+ to have a 48% shot. i can tell you my friend with a 3.5ish got in to med school with a 514.

That's for MD. With a 500 OP will get into a DO school.

Your GPA is average btw, as far as I kno

A 3.5 is competitive for every school. At that point the MCAT and ECs come into play

OP, bust your butt to do well on the retake and apply first thing next cycle. Your chances are very low for this cycle.

Thanks for your constructive feedback!

Just some clarification, I'm applying to all DO schools and my gpa is above average for many of the schools I am applying for.
Also, several schools I have spoken to interview through April and don't have secondary deadlines until march. I know it's possible to get in, I was just wondering if anyone knows of cases of people who were successful doing it

You're correct your stats are/can be competitive.... But you need to show some maturity right now! The spots at established schools are for sure taken in March/April. Good schools aren't going to kick someone off their wait list because you beat a patient, prepared applicant by .1-.2 gpa. You're competitive for DO school... That just means you're average because the massive majority of people applying are competitive (and the minority are people that have poor stats but are deserving of the acceptance). @AnatomyGrey12 is right, work hard and apply next cycle. You shouldn't be willing to dumpster dive because you want instant gratification!

Also I have never heard of anyone getting excepted that late to a DO school. Weirdly enough my brother got excepted very late in the cycle but that was for a MD school and his stats/EC/experiences were spotless....

Applying this cycle with a first MCAT attempt of 494 is a poor decision and is asking for being completely rejected. Wait until you know your retake score and then apply day 1 next cycle. Many schools will NOT accept a January MCAT score a few do but others don't. When you get into a more established school you can come back and thank us later, provided you get a 505+ of course

The only people I have heard of getting accepted extremely late are stellar applicants with very high stats (ex. 3.9 gpa, 520 MCAT, etc.). You are competitive (provided you do well on your second MCAT attempt) but average/slightly above average stats will not be enough to get you in that late in the cycle. Do you feel you have an idea why you scored low on the first MCAT?

My dude you should be less worried about applying and more about the MCAT. Try to understand why you got a 494, study, retake and then come back for advice. Its a lot easier said then done to think you'll go up 10+ points on the MCAT so focus on that

Is this true?? I have an interview on the 24th of jan, should I not go?? I was told by one of the Adcoms on the website that march is late D:

No you're fine. If you were interviewing in March (like OP would be) then I would be more worried. Lots of people get accepted from later interviews, especially DO schools. Also don't forget how much movement happens in DO waitlists.

You might have a shot at the absolute garbage can schools like LU and WCU, and all the new ones this and last cycle. But if I was you, I would 100% focus on the MCAT, even push the date back farther if you're not ready. Another sub 502 score would kill your future.

Interviewing in January is totally fine.
They'd be taking their MCAT in January, getting their score in February, and interviewing in March.
That's very late.

Not to bring about any hope or anything, but as a case of proven luck I took the Jan MCAT and got into 2 schools. But that said you have to absolutely obliterate the MCAT and must have a unique application (notice I didnt say stellar, I said unique, something must be different than the typical 3.5+ premed kid)

You're making it sound like you are one of seven unicorn breeders in North America!

All joking aside though this is interesting information!

lol Thats def. not me. Im only good at this medical school thing. Although I will mention, I think what helped my application aside from having great numbers was my experience in working for the CDC as a Ebola Public Health Adviser.....
