I am a 4th year and due to some circumstances cannot start residency at the usual time. How difficult is it to find something that starts in January?

Thanks

The difficulty depends on what you want to specialize in. After the Match, the programs get a breather and you can easily arrange interviews from May on. But if you are going to try for a competitive field, you might have better luck if you wait for the next match and do some away rotations or get some research under your belt during that time.

I have never heard of a residency that starts in January. Programs are not flexible about the work schedule. I think that if you absolutely can't start until January you will probably have to postpone starting your residency for a year so you can start the following July.

I have seen residents start Anesthesiology in January. I have also seen IM PGY1 and PGY 3 residents take leave of absence. If you are going are not choosy, this can be done but is not necessarily your best option.

FREIDA has "negotiable starting dates" as a search criterium. I'm not 100% sure but I believe there are quite a few programs that don't require you to start in the summer.

Anyway, it's a good place to start looking.

Good luck.
