Good afternoon all:

I'm a prospective post-bacc newbie interested in med school (no surprise there...). I've done some basic research, but probably lack some of the common knowledge that most of you guys have (about which programs are most-prestigious, the higher likelihood of success in gaining admission through Program A vs. Program B, etc.) I'm learning a lot as I read through the threads, but thought I should actively seek some specific advice.

Personal background:

I went to a good undergraduate university and did well and a pretty good law school with decent grades, but have a few personal and professional reasons for wanting to pursue a health profession. I do plan on finishing law school (not sure if this matters, but slightly different than the previous law school poster). Can I get some thoughts on what programs might be best?

I do plan on volunteering at a local hospital, but remain unsure of the potential difference in prestige in picking a respectable hospital vs. trying to find a specialist and volunteering with that smaller office for more face type with an experienced practitioner.

My high school record and SAT were far from the best, so I'm a bit discouraged by schools like Columbia that seem to put a lot of weight on high school performance. Am I too much of a "noob" for thinking I might still have a chance with subsequent good performance?

Thanks in advance! Glad to be a part of the community!
