Jefferson (SKMC)

Thoughts:
  • I’m from Philadelphia/currently live in Philly
  • My family and partner live in and around the city = lots of support
  • SKMC is a strong, well-regarded medical school
  • Genuinely had a really good time at the interview, and the people seem amazing
  • I may be interested in dermatology, and SKMC has a great derm program (though I know it’s very competitive, and I’m still very open-minded specialty-wise)
  • Seen conflicting statements saying that SKMC is better vs the two schools are equal in home prgrams, and matching

Tulane

Thoughts:
  • A big part of me wants to live somewhere new and experience a different city
  • If I stay in Philly, it would be very easy for me to remain there long-term (like get married and have kids) without ever really living anywhere else
  • I’ve been to New Orleans before and loved it—it feels like a city I’d really enjoy
  • One of my best friends from college is an M2 at Tulane, and I would live with her = fun!
  • Would like to end up in Philly for residency, that would be easier to do at skmc
  • Would be long-distance with my partner for at least 1 yr, maybe 2, which would be sad

I feel like I would love either school, both the curriculums sound like places I'd thrive and both are P/F for Phase 1; it's honestly just the city part that is kinda driving me crazy. I’d love to hear thoughts from people who chose between staying close to home vs. going somewhere new, or anyone with insight into either school. Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forums.

What does your partner think or want? Is there a wedding date or marriage plan? Is starting/raising a family a concern?

Thanks!

He would prefer Philly (he just bought a townhouse), but we're both fine with doing long-distance if I choose Tulane, and he would move there for at least the last 2 yrs of school. No wedding or plans to start a family anytime soon, I would say that's more like 4-8 yrs away.
