UC Irvine Pros

  • Integrated plastics pathway and strong tissue engineering research infrastructure (Widgerow lab)
  • Orange County location — strong job market for partner, good quality of life
  • Solid surgical oncology and ENT/head & neck faculty
  • California location = easier path to West Coast residency programs long-term
Cons

  • Higher cost of living in Orange County
  • Less of a "classic" medical school culture/social scene compared to Tulane

Tulane Pros

  • Strong national name recognition and alumni network
  • New Orleans is an incredible city for the medical school experience
  • Solid general surgery program and clinical volume
Cons

  • Louisiana location makes California residency harder to pursue long-term
  • Plastics/tissue engineering research not as prominent
  • Partner career opportunities more limited

Summary: For anyone prioritizing surgical subspecialty research, potential West Coast or Colorado residency pipeline, and long-term career flexibility — is UCI the clear winner here, or am I missing something about Tulane? Is there a big difference in how these 2 schools are perceived when it comes to residency apps, especially in surgical subspecialties?

If you’re considering plastics and want to stay in CA or west coast for residency there’s only one answer. Unless there’s a huge cost difference go to Irvine.
