I've been offered an associate position where I'll be classified as an independent contractor. The proposed compensation is 50% collections - 50% lab bill - 50% assistant wages. I'm really not sure what assistants make to decide if this is a fair offer. No liability, CE, health insurance.

What do you think?

Hi be careful. First of all if they are telling you what to do you are NOT and independent contractor. You are an employee. The reason why they tell you that is becuase they want to save on taxes and since you don't know better and are desperate to get a job you will go for it.
50% collection?👎 Lets say you produced $100,000 for one month, well untill the office does not collect it you DON"T get paid. That could take months. Not fair. 50% of lab bill. Well imagine you have not gotten paid because the patient has not paid but the lab still wants their money. You then have to give then the 50% even though you don't have a dime.
50% of assistant wages, what if the assistant is no good? what if they won't help you to produce? You have to tell them what to do and even do it for them. So who is making out in this deal? They are so if I were you I would NOT do this. Not a fair offer at all.🙁

If you have any other concerns let me know. Good luck God Bless!

That doesn't sound too unreasonable to me. Most contracts in my city are for 40% of collections after all lab fees have been taken off. I'm not responsible for any of the other overhead costs since those come out of the 60% that the principal dentist gets.

You should ask more questions about having to pay for your assistant...And if that's the case, you should also negotiate some kind of term where you get to hire and fire your own assistant. If her (or his!) salary comes out of your pocket, then you should have some discretion there for sure.

In this area being considered an independent contractor is also standard.

Really? I disagree. I don't think it's a good idea to be considered an independent contractor.
