Job Interview clothes

Hello all. Getting out of residency soon and trying to set up some moonlighting gigs. Have two meetings set up. One is more of a "come by and we'll show you the department and take you to lunch," with a democratic group. The other sounds more official with a corporate group. Problem is, I've been in the Army, school, or residency for so long, I don't know what I should wear to these things. Suit and tie? Dress shirt and slacks? Opinions would be helpful. Thanks.

Have you been to South Carolina in May? NO ONE wears a tie. Heck, when I was in Hawai'i, I saw exactly ONE person in a tie - it was a judge.

I wore a casual blazer, dark jeans, and a button down shirt. This was in Texas. I dunno we're ER physicians, residency/school is over, I think you can dispense with the monkey suit at this point. In general interviews for ER jobs are pretty low key, if they are talking to you, they will probably hire you. It's really much more diametric at this point, a group either needs more staff and they are hiring, or they are not and they wont be hiring.

Granted, this might not apply to "competitive" academic jobs on the coasts where fellowships, research, and specific administrative/academic experiences are more de rigeur. I have no personal knowledge to these types of jobs, so I can't say what is standard/expected in these situations as most of my experience has been applying to community jobs.

My experience was always wear the suit. Sure you can get away with other clothes, but a suit never fails.

I tend to agree with this...although if you wore a full suit and decided to take the tie off, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world (especially if it's hot out).

Since first impressions are so important, why would you want to chance it?

As an aside, I remember I interviewed at a hospital just for some part time work. They wanted me to come in on a day I was working. I said no problem...but is it OK if I come in my scrubs? They said yea no problem. And I was hired. But I was happy I asked.
