How to handle job interviews (for Hospitalist) during PGY3? Schedule interviews during vacation, or schedule them on weekends? (program not very flexible with scheduling)

Do most hospitals pay for travel costs, or are the interviews mostly over the phone and/or Skype?

I'm asking because my research program might conflict with this.

Do it whenever you know you have time off and won't be on call.

If you're looking at undesirable areas, they will generally pay to get you out there and for a hotel. If it's a popular area, you'll probably be footing the bill for everything.

Even if they offer a skype interview (which I personally never was offered while interviewing) why would you want to take that option anyway? If you have no idea what the hospital looks like, who your coworkers are going to be, get to see the state of affairs firsthand... you're taking a rather large gamble that you're actually going to like the place.

You should not be paying anything to attend an interview. This is the big leagues and you are now a valuable professional. If an employer wants you to pay out of pocket to interview, that’s a huge red flag. Always ask if they will be booking the travel or if you should do it and get reimbursed, and clarify the reimbursement policy.
