So through some connections I interviewed and actually RECEIVED a job offer!!!
:soexcited::soexcited::clap::highfive:
It is a single practice moving to a two man practice. The pathologist's histotech quit so my job responsibilities will include doing some slide processing, accessioning, and immunostaining. I figure it will be nice to be part of the process the whole way through and will get to see the interesting cases. I will get to gross and take call and cover for him when he is on vacation -- INDEPENDENTLY!

The only downside is the salary. Starting out at 72K + bene's. Here is where I need some advice -- would you negotiate upa few thousand or just look at this as akin to a "Jr. Faculty" position and hope that maybe we can get some more accounts and we can make more money? The pathologist said that although his specimen numbers have been more or less stable, he sees great opportunity for business expansion as the population continues to get older.

Also -- is it unethical to take this job instead of my next fellowship? My blood banking fellowship would also kind of be going to waste in this position. I feel though that it would be easier for my family on this salary than another one. Plus we have potentially more stability.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you're being nickel and dimed.

1. That starting salary is too low. I cannot imagine any physician in any specialty starting at below six figures.

2. This practice expects you to do histotech work for free? If you're doing histotech work you should be paid a histotech's salary ON TOP of your own(which I have said is far too low)

I'd shove it.

Ok, now we know you are a troll.

Real nice.

Not necessary. Your salary should cover some Blood Bank bench work. As a matter of fact, your boss should fire one of the bb techs and dump his/her shift on you.

1. I agree -- I never thought I would see the day when I might have to consider it.

2. We have a part time histotech that fills in that may go to almost full time. I am not sure how much time I would actually have to put in doing histo work. The Path said he isn't sure at this point either.

Yeah I am considering shoving it. Need to decide soon though. Might take it? I dont know. Thats why I posted to see if anyone had some thoughts. Obviously telling everyone I am a "troll" doesn't help anyone out at this point. Maybe I should ask for 6 figures? More vacation? Less call?

Its cool though. I can certainly understand not knowing everyone else's circumstances can be hard to figure out.

I am pretty sure if THAT happened, I would tell him to screw off!!!:xf::xf:

I'd stick with landscaping if i was u. This has got be raider or one of those othe r community practroce trills. Who think academics train to many pathologists.

lol, you had me for a minute there. When you said "slide processing" I got a little confused but figured maybe you were the one who was confused. You completely blew it with your "excitement" about your "independence."

If you were a proper, educated pathology forum troll you would probably know that almost all single-man practices do not have their own immunostainer. Nice try though.

In the remote chance that you are serious, this is not a real job.

Lets keep it positive here okay??? 👎thumbdown👍👍

Immunostaining has not always been fully automated I guess and some practices don't have automated staining yet. The path is thinking about getting a stainer if the workload increases but for right now they have been doing a limited panel using partially automated processes.

Yes I am excited about Independence. With this job I would be independent when the path is gone. At another fellowship I wouldn't have any yet.

 This paragraph made my day. LOL! That is good stuff.

"see the process the whole way through" LOL.

"get to gross and take call for him" LOL.

I needed a good laugh today. Nice work.
