Hello,

I am wondering how exactly EM docs find non-academic jobs. Are they usually group practices or do they work independently?

Basically, I want to know more about the "job" side of Emergency Medicine. Not necessarily the 'work' (patients, procedures, etc... I'm fairly familiar with all of that). Is there a book or something I could read explaining this?

Short answer to your question: There are a ton of different ways that groups are set up: independent contractor, democratic group, direct employee , etc. EPs may earn a straight salary or get revenue exclusively from what they bill - and of course anything in between. There's some involved discussion of this in the old threads (use search feature).

You may be interested in some of EMRA's books:

The first one, the medical student guide is a must have and actually has several chapters on community vs. academics, practice groups, etc.

Hope that helps.

The majority of people pick a job based one location, then on type of practice. Most jobs these days you will be employed by a group (either large or small). Some groups advertise when they have open positions, but often these are lower-paying or less attractive jobs. The best way to find something you want is to determine what area you want to practice in, then send letters to the groups who run hospitals in that area. With some luck they'll call you up if they are hiring.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will look into those books (or see if I can find someone who has one 🙂)

Given that you're a med student, you can probably afford to wait a couple of years before you start looking for your job in EM. I'd focus your time more towards things like Step I, Step II, passing your clearkships, matching maybe. Just a thought.

I would take a wild guess and say yes. If the title said something about Leviathan also...then maybe you wouldn't be the only one.
