For those that knew him, or have been a part of the EM family for a while, John Marx passed away yesterday in his sleep. It was completely unexpected, and obviously a shock to all of us.

He was Chair Emeritus at Carolinas, a nationally and internationally well known speaker, accomplished editor, and author of many publications.

Humble beyond belief, he was an example for all of us. I was lucky enough to call him a friend.

Please pass the word.

I never met him, but have heard several lectures he gave, and our paths crossed in the past. Everyone I've ever heard talk about him told stories that legends are based on - that he was kind, an excellent educator, lead by example, and held those around him to the highest standards. I heard that he frequently told trainees it was their job to know medicine better than the consultants, in order to always do what's right for the patients. He will be missed.

He was randomly assigned to me as a virtual advisor through SAEM. I had the opportunity to meet him and he was kind and generous to me beyond my wildest expectations. I wish his family and friends the best.
