Whats the call schedule like at Johns Hopkins? Whats the teaching like? Do you get a lot of time with attendings or is it mostly resident to resident?

I'm a new (or now just sorta new!) PGY-1 at Johns Hopkins. It's an awesome place. Love it. I'm completely happy that I matched here. It's exactly what I was expecting and wanted... intense, interesting difficult patients, very high expectations, great research and thinking people, very academic but with a mix of community program thrown in for perspective, good numbers for an academic program, and awesome PEOPLE (faculty, residents, staff, program director, chairman!). Okay, enough about how much I like it. The question was about call . . .

Our program and director are really serious about the 80 hour workweek. It really depends on the rotation and what the patient load demands, but in general I average 80 weeks. Some more, some less. You definitely spend time thinking about work even when you're not there, reading about patients and problems, practicing basic surgical skills, and improving yourself as an ob/gyn. I love it. The program director is dedicated to us being "the BEST program in the country," and I think she's doing it. So call is worked out with nightfloats and so forth so that you average about 1 overnight call q7 ! It's awesome. Call can be tough/long/demanding, but really amazing and the seniors who back us up are right there beside us, advising and pushing us. There, that should answer that question.

Now, as for the other question about the requirements and what the reviewers are looking for -- that's tough to give a simple answer to. As far as I know, they are looking for people who are pleasant, durable, positive, and smart. We need true team players. Most of our successful top applicants have something unique, interesting, unusual, or amazing in their history. It's a great group of residents. You can always just apply and see what happens. I should say, that for all the brightness and braininess I see in my fellow residents, they're also completely down to earth and accessible people. Not a really stuffy program.

So call is worked out with nightfloats and so forth so that you average about 1 overnight call q7 ! It's awesome. Call can be tough/long/demanding, but really amazing and the seniors who back us up are right there beside us, advising and pushing us. There, that should answer that question.


q7 call .. really? so since you said " average" does that mean some rotations are heavier -- some lighter?
or is it pretty consistent q7 call?

1. Yes, q7 on average except in unusual situations. That means that we cover overnight calls only as nightfloat (5 or 6 days a week) OR weekend call (with Friday OR Saturday overnight). You can learn more on the JHU GYN/OB website.

2. I didn't directly answer the question about teaching above before. Yes, it's great! The attendings are always around and always teaching, especially on ob (in house attending 24/7). The teaching from the seniors is abundant and really great -- they're your frontline for learning the basics and they are GREAT!

3. There's no board score cutoff, but the program is HIGHLY highly selective, so if your scores are low, there should be something else about your application/letters/experience/personality that will indicate you are a good fit for our program. Sorry no definites!

Hi KJH,
thanks for all your great post. I was wondering -- when is the signout time at Hopkins? and what time are rounds in the mornings generally? and when/what days are didactics held? I looked on the website -- but coudnl't find it. Althought I found a great idea -- about taking taxis home post-call and getting reimbursed (if you are too tired to drive) that was a fabulous idea -- speaking from someone who has pulled over and taken a taxi home for that very reason! (no reimbursement though)
