Hey all..

I just recently became interested in joining the military and was wondering if it's a normal procedure to join the military (army specifically) right after the completion of dental school?

Thanks..

It is the 2nd most common way. The most common is to take the scholarship that pays for school. If you come in after school you can take the loan repayment program which pays you $40k/yr (pre-tax) for 4 yrs. You can also look at the Army Reserve which will payback up to $250k for a 6 yr obligation.

Don't you also get the 150k sign on bonus as a dentist right out of school...on top of the loan pay back?

No.. If you want to owe the Army an additional 3 years beyond what the 4 yrs that the loan repayment will cost you they will give you an additional $75k

So if I understand it correctly :

If you want the 75k Bonus - you will have 3 years service obligation
If you want the loan repayment - 40k every year : you will have 4 years service obligation

if you want both : then your obligation is 7 years.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Also how does the 250k with reserves work? Dr Mover, can you please shed some more light on that. Thank you.

You are correct on understanding the different bonuses - 7 yrs total if you want both. Any additional post graduate training you do will be in addition to those obligations.

With the reserves you apply with them after you are a dentist. You set up your private practice wherever you want, and do your required reserve drills and obligations 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year with the Reserve. http://www.armydentalcaresystem.army.mil/usarc/usarindex.html

Thank you Dr Mover for sharing the link. What I understood is:

For reserves Loan Repayment the following link says http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/dentist/benefits.html#army_reserve

Loan repayment is available as : 20k - 20k and 10 k in third year.

But the other link says http://www.goarmy.com/content/dam/g... FS Army Reserve Dentistry Sep 11 LowRes.pdf

HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM (HPLR) —For each year you serve, you can receive up to $40,000 a year toward your outstanding educational loans — up to a maximum of $250,000 — if you're a fully qualified general dentist, comprehensive dentist, oral surgeon or prosthodontist, and you agree to serve in an Army Reserve Troop Program Unit or the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program.

May be the highlight is what is making the difference?

2. SPECIAL PAY — If you're a general dentist, comprehensive dentist, oral surgeon or prosthodontist, you can earn a special pay of $25,000 per year for three years — a total of $75,000. HPB participants must agree to serve in an Army Reserve Troop Program Unit or the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program while receiving this special pay.

Can you please explain what is this?

3. Basic Pay
Basic Allowance for Housing (Non-taxable)
Basic Allowance for Subsistence (Non-taxable)
Professional pay

Can you please approximate the numbers or guide me to a link?

Once again thank you so much. Just trying to make sure I understand before I sign the paperwork.

The $250k is the current amount for loan repayment in the Reserves. If you choose that route, just make sure the paperwork says that before you sign 🙂

The $75k is the sign on bonus for joining if you choose not to do the loan repayment. I thought it was also available for general dentists, but since I am active duty I am only peripherally aware of what the Reserves and Guard do...sorry
3. Basic Pay These amounts are only really applicable if you are on active duty, if you are in the Reserves, you only get them for 2 weeks out of the year when you do your active duty time.
Basic Allowance for Housing (Non-taxable) Housing payment...based upon the zip code of where you are assigned. Ranges from $1200-3300/month
Basic Allowance for Subsistence (Non-taxable) monthly amount for food - around $250/month
Professional pay Bonus money you get for being a dentist and/or signing a multi-year retention bonus.

Can you please approximate the numbers or guide me to a link?

Hope that helps

Is it a $75k accession bonus? I thought they increased it to $150k.

Yeah, I spoke with a Navy recruiter and was told the same thing...150k accession bonus if you're right out of dental school. And you qualify for loan repayment.

I just confirmed with Army recruiting that current bonus for 2013 is $75k for a direct accession for a 3 yr obligation or loan repayment for $40k/yr (maximum of 4 yrs). They were not aware of any change to this rule for next year.

The only exception to this is if someone has completed a 2 yr AEGD or is OMFS, they can qualify for a $300k sign on bonus (no other specialty qualifies for this).

Thanks for the info Dr Mower.

Would you please know the breakdown of 250k loan repayment for the reserves? My recuiter was only aware of 20k,20k followed by 10k.

I am joining Army under an immigration program for which my time commitment will be either 3 years of active duty or 6 years of selected reserve.

My recruiter is not aware if my service obligation will change with the Bonus or the Loan repayment? He is trying to find out but we have no concrete information as of yet.

To come on active duty you need to be a US Citizen, for the Reserves you need a green card. Here is all the options for coming into the Resrves. Your recruiter can find the same information in the FY 13 Army Medical Department Recruiting Program Guide

Again thank you doc! - this is plethora of information and will help me and my recuiter greatly.

- Yes I will be applying for my citizenship in coming months.

1. My application is awaiting the April board review. Will you have any idea when the April board convenes?

2. What are AR Troop Program Unit, AMEDD Professional Medical Command (APMC) or in the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program. Sorry I am clueless on these terms.

These are different options in the Reserves. They all have different requirements on how often you must do things, as well as how easy/difficult it might be to get a retirement. I would recommend a "Google" Search to see the differences.

Thank you doc!
I am waiting for the april board results. Lets see how it goes.

If you take mdssp and strap can you still qualify for the loan repayment (hplrp) and bonuses (special pay program)? Thanks. Basically in what way can I get the most incentives overall. I am not afraid of a large obligation. Could I do just strap and get hplrp + special pay after etc. What combinations works the best? Also, if I join regular guard during med school can I go into strap program no problem?
