Dear all:

I am very interested in pursuing a career in neuroradiology, most likely with both a diagnostic and interventional component. I am an MD/PhD student who has returned to medical school after finishing his PhD. I was wondering if there are any programs that offer joint admission to a radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship when applying as an MS4 through ERAS.

I have only found one such program (this is actually a 7-year Neurology/Radiology/Neuroradiology Program):
http://www.med.nyu.edu/neurology/training/neurorad/
which still exists according to Freida.

Are there any other residency programs that offer combined training and certification in Radiology and Neuroradiology? If not, how difficult is it to match into a neuroradiology fellowship after diagnostic radiology training?

Thank you

Duke...sort of. They don't have an official joint radiology-neuroradiology program, but theirs is a combined residency-fellowship program where you are guaranteed whatever fellowship you choose, which you select on Sept 1 of the third year. The flipside to that is that you are committed to doing a fellowship and doing it at Duke (though technically you could do a fellowship elsewhere, it's rarely done and not encouraged). When I interviewed a couple years ago Penn was also heading in this direction, but I'm not sure what's happened with that since then.

But in reality, fellowships aren't that competitive and, assuming you're in good standing at your residency program, you'll be able to get a solid one somewhere.

That program isn't accepting apps anymore.

especially not neuroradiology, if you are a radiology resident you can easily become a neuroradiologist

I was interested in this program at one point, too. BUt then I asked a handful of radiology attendings I worked with who are dual board certified in radiology and something else. None of them said the additional training really helped them that much; their co-workers without dual board certification were just as capable. At the same time, none of them said they were paid more because of it, it was just that they had additional training that they didn't really use much. They all told me to do it if I really wanted to know the subject matter and would be satisfied that way.
So, an extra year and a certification that won't really do anything for you? It's not a surprise they aren't accepting apps anymore.

Thank you all for the valuable information, including about the NYU joint program not accepting applicants, the Duke program's de facto inclusion of a fellowship within their residency, and the Penn program's somewhat similar approach ("The program's fourth year is flexible, allowing residents to pursue creative individual interests. Residents can use the year to develop broad clinical and radiological expertise in a specific subspecialty as part of a two year subspecialty fellowship program."). I am glad to hear that one can get a fellowship after completing a radiology residency if one is in "good standing" at their residency program.
