journal recommendations

If you want journals, I suggest joining professional societies (at a discount, of course 🙂) that include their journal as part of the package. I currently get JAMA and Annals of Emergency Medicine.
Good luck finding time to read them. They look pretty on my bookshelf, but I'm usually way too busy to actually read them. If I need an article, I usually find it online and print it for myself and whatever team I'm on at the time.

The New England Journal of Medicine is an excellent well rounded journal. It is only $65.00 for the whole year as a student when you subscribe. It's my favorite journal.

NEJM is great, but I think the on-line version is more flexible for us students. Most likely your library or your institution already has institutional suscription to it, and you should be able to get a user name and password. That way, you dont have to pay extra to get printed copy, and you dont have to leave it on your shelf to collect dust if you dont have time, and you can read it when you do. And the fact it is online means you can print a copy anywhere there is internet computers, so you can print copies for the team without having to go to the photocopiers.
JAMA is also a good one, and as a package of joining AMA as a student you get JAMA for 4 years when you pay 65$, which is a deal.

Another nomination here for NEJM. (JAMA is good too, but I get that for free via my AMA membership.)
The strange thing about NEJM's pricing, though, is that it's $65/year (for us students) for the print and online version, but $99/year for the online version only. Someone please explain that to me. 🙂

There is a journal from the Cleveland Clinic... it is aimed at interns and residents. It is a very good journal, hopefully yoru school or hospital library has a copy, it is very well read and easily readable as a medical student (and covers topics of General IM).
I wholeheartedly agree with the Annals of Emergency Medicine but I'm an EM intern.

I'm in the AMA and I can't get them to stop sending me my weekly JAMAs. I wrote to them, emailed, and called. But yet, every Tuesday, there it is. Bummer. I never read it anyways. On the other hand, my subscription ($100/yr) to The Journal of Neurosurgery lapsed and they d/c'ed my subscription!🙁

The five most widely read and repected general medical journals are NEJM, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet, and British Medical Journal.
My personal favorites are BMJ (which is free online) and NEJM (worth getting a subscription to if you can't get online access through your school). JAMA is free with student AMA membership, whcih has been mentioned before. Annals of Internal Medicine is free online to student members of the American College of Physicians (an excellent organization to join if you are interested in IM-- http://www.acponline.org/srf/student_how_join.htm).
Another key (in my opinion) publication for internists and future internists is The Medical Letter-- "an independent, peer-reviewed, nonprofit publication that offers unbiased critical evaluations of drugs, with special emphasis on new drugs". You get a deep discount (I think $21 a year) if you are a member of AMSA- see AMSA's member benefits web page for more info, and www.medletter.com.
Save trees and stick to electronic journals when possible.
