Hey guys,

I am looking to publish a case report related to hematology/oncology/ICU/medicine and was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting IM case reports accepted to any journals that are peer reviewed and do not have a ridiculous processing fee.

I think this would be a good source for people in the future who are trying to get something published as well.

Personally, I have only succeeded with BMJ Case Reports in the past but I don't think this is the best venue for what I am trying to get published now.

Thank you!

At least in hematology, very few non-open access journals take case reports, and they are very selective.

Check with your program, they may have something that can help you out. My program pays submission fees sometimes, and also they have a subscription deal with a network of open access journals where we can publish our stuff without the fees in a variety of journals.

yeah I know my program will cover a lot of fees I think most likely that will be the way to go.

Any decent or at least not too garbage sounding heme/onc journals that you have submitted to before on this premise? My school will cover it as long as it is a "reputable" open access journal.

Annals or JAMA may be your best bet.

The Hindawi group has a journal for everything, accepts nearly everything, and collects a handsome publication fee for service.

But Annals is ACP, how are they easy to publish

You will not get something into Annals or JAMA unless you literally discover a new condition. Case reports are usually published in smaller journals or more specific journals (try your states medical journal). I was able to publish one this way and it was relatively easy. Best of luck.

OP didn't ask for a "easy" to publish journal.

He asked for an opinion of a way to get his case report published. I guess what I was trying to say is suggesting Annals, JAMA or most journals of that caliber to submit a case report is not realistic advice unless it's a major medical discovery. They rarely accept and publish case reports anymore in these journals. The closest thing published for case reports in those caliber journals are puzzling clinical images but that was not his question. Something tells me if he had found a breakthrough of this caliber then he wouldn't be asking what journal to publish it in.

Lol.

Right...but you said that JAMA or Annals may be the OP's "best bet" for publishing a case report. "Best bet" generally implies "highest likelihood."

I tried to publish a case report once. It was my second worst experience in medical school, after gen surg.

Any suggestions for teachable moment cases? JAMA is the only one that does this but it requires the patient's permission whom is lost to follow up.

Not every journal will require patient permission, especially if it does not involve the face. However, it's still good form to have sort of documentation if possible.

What field in IM is this in? Case reports in heme/onc are impossible to get published, but ID isn't too difficult. JAMA will be difficult, but you may have more luck in a sub-specialty journal

This is a nephrology / ID / Gi case where the patient had one of the hepatitis glomerulonephritis and the team managing him forgot to check hepatitis panel before going to biopsy and starting all the cytotoxic drugs. The patient did not benefit significantly from treatment but subsequently got worse from his hepatitis down the road

For some reason case reports have become obscenely difficult to publish in IM as a whole - I'm not really sure why, tbh.

Let me offer some of my experience with this stuff. A lot of current journals are residency or more particularly "NAME" specific. And a lot of cases they publish are just crap. Some of the cases don't even more sense, and they have like 3 references. Seriously this is just all politics. So unless you are from more top tier program, or partner up with one you are screwed.
