hey, question. I will be starting Jr college in fall of 04. will med schools look at that in a negative way ? 😕

Hi newbie - welcome to SDN - this question gets asked once a week and I always answer it the same way and there will be at least 5 posts that completely contradict mine - but anyhoo....

I did 3 semesters at JC - transfered to a 4-year - went back to a JC for another 2 years to do my pre-meds. And I had 5 W's from dropping out of school 10 years ago when I was a freshman. So I've had a less than spotless past, and yet.....

I stand by the assumption that med schools cannot expect that all doctors-to-be will have had a standard, pristene 4-year career, which presupposes that every doctor could afford a 4-year institution - I also stand by the assumption that if you believe, you can achieve. Do great at your JC, do even better at your 4-year - I think any med school that holds that against you is not a very reasonable one.

Call the schools you are interested in and ask them. The conversation will go something like this:

You, ?I attended a JC for X semesters. Will this affect my acceptance to this school??

Med School, "Is the school in question accredited?".

You will say, "Yes".

Med School, "There shouldn't be any problems as long as you met the prerequisites".

P.S. Do a search of SDN?.there are hundreds of these out there.

(Ok lets use this thread- here's my comment from the other thread.)

Keep grades consistent through the JC and the senior university later on and you should be fine. Careful with JC counselors! They often aren't familiar with the needs of premeds/transfer students. Stay on top of transfer requirements (you probably wont need the AA/AS degree to transfer.)

There aren't any disadvantage to going to a JC. PM me if you have specific questions about getting to medschool as a CC transfer student.
