Is it possible to judge from the interview how it went? If your interview compliments you and tells you that it's a pleasure to meet you, would this mean acceptance? Or do they compliment everyone out of politeness?

i've read both on this site...i wouldn't judge by your interviewers responses (unless maybe they're really negative), but rather by how you felt the interview went.

also, consider how many interviewed applicants are accepted and you'll have a better gauge of how likely the school is to accept you.

"its a pleasure to meet you" sounds like politeness.
"hope to see you in the fall" might be more promising.
but a lot of schools only count the interview as 25-30% of the whole picture, so nothing is guaranteed.

:luck:

i think it all depends on the school and the interviewer. I've had 2 interviews. At SIU I interviewed with a big wig in admissions who actually was going to be "presenting my file". From his comments during and after the interview, I felt I was as good as accepted. At Iowa, however, it didn't seem like my interviewers did anything but write a blurb about how the interview went and then hand it to the admissions committee.

Obviously in the first instance, the interviewers hints and such mean a lot more.

All interviewers are going to say it was nice to meet you. Would you ever tell someone, "It wasn't nice to meet you?" Come on now. I've had interviewers who were extremely nice but probably mentally ripped my application to shreds since I was subsequently rejected. I've also had interviewers who were sort of curt and gruff but I ended up getting accepted.

no, they could say "good luck." that's the interview farewell that's worried me the most. if the interviewer liked me, i wouldn't need luck.

Haha, I wouldn't think anything of it. I wish good luck to everyone.

i think its all mostly politeness... i knew EVMS was a possible acceptance because i was given one of the interviewers business cards and on my way out the same one shook my hand twice and told me that im going to make a wonderful physician.... a general good feeling... but who knows. they also are most like just being nice.. they know we're nervous and stuff.

I don't think it matters at all, since the interview is only a part of the application decision. My interviewer at a school emailed me after saying he enjoyed talking to me. My friend who interviewed at the same school, did not receive an email. Needless to say, he was accepted and I was rejected 🙄

Yeah, you can't really tell because you don't know what the interviewer is looking for. Some get really creative, so you really just have to put your best foot forward and hope for the best.

That's what I got at one place I interviewed...my acceptance was post-marked 2 days later! 😍 👍

I can't tell one way or another about any of the interviews I've done...and I interview people for positions in my soon to be former career!!! 😕

Anecdotal SDN evidence suggests that interviewees are terrible judges of the interviewers opinion at the conclusion of the interview.

So we suck at figuring it out.👍 👎 😕

I agree that what your interviewer says to you has little to no bearing on the ultimate outcome.

Agree. People tend to keep it nice on interview day. It's not uncommon for folks to say, "I enjoyed meeting you", "it was a pleasure", "call me if you have any questions" etc. Assume they say that to everyone (as they likely do).
