I am going to do an away rotation at UCLA in October. Does anyone have any experience there or have any helpful information about the rotation & program?

I heard that the rotation is fairly "hands-off" as compared to the Harbor-UCLA rotation that is done at the VA. I have already done a rotation at my home school and I feel pretty comfortable working up patient for presentation to residents. Is there any hope of getting some hands-on exprience?

Regarding the program, I have heard that the faculty members are not too friendly and that the residents are not very happy (over-worked?)...this is all word-of-mouth, but I would be interested to know if anyone has personal experience there.

I just mailed off my CAS and working on the ERAS. Is there anything I need to do in the meantime or do I just wait for programs to contact me?

Thanks.

dear maz,

i did a rotation there and interviewed there for residency. like all other medical student rotations that you have done, so much of your experience will depend on which residents/fellows/faculty you work with. my experience was pleasant. others (medical students and residents) have not been like mine. I will say that your assesment of a rotation at the Institute itself is rather accurate. For me, it was my first medical student ophtho rotation so I was just getting used to figuring out how to turn the slit lamp on and focus the damn thing, so I didn't mind tagging along with the resident and not seeing patients on my own. Some of the patients are not that excited to see fellows or residents let alone someone in a short white coat. Feel free to PM me if you want my other honest takes on JSEI, its residency program and why i ranked a few other programs over it. I also beleive one of our moderators is a fellow there right now...what a great resource!

Thanks for the reply Ruben.

I would appreciate input from anyone else who did a rotation at JSEI or is there now.

Oh yeah, I foregot to say patt yourself on the back now that your CAS is out and just hang out until programs start to contact you by snail/e-mail/telephone. Actually the resident I worked with at Stein gave me the best advice, make a big spread sheet of all the programs you applied to, once they start contacting you keep track of which interview dates they offer and which date you have accepted. THis helps maximize the number of interviews and minimize the number of plane trips. Good luck!
