Hi Sanju,

Yes I did give my exam this July.It wasnt good at all,But Im keeping my fingers crossed and waiting for the result.
Im going to start my application soon.
So far I have decided on NYU and BU,
Im not sure about the rest.
Any suggestions,please let me know,
Good luck to you as well.

hey i just heard that the part 1 results will be out by sept 11th..so chill&n'joi..and ek_dds..dont worry..all of us are sailing in the same boat..the xams were on the whole bad..good luck to all

hey guys,
my name is sreshti and have given the exams in july just like all of you and have nothing different to say about what it was like!!!i called the ada and they told me that it would be likely to have the results out by this month end.
i was wondering what universities are open now with their applications and what else do we need in hand before they are out.what do u think the competition is like?do u guys know anyone who joined idp in chicago?its very inexpensive but limits u to practice in one state.
hey guys do add in a lot of info and share ideas as this would help us be cautious about the things we decide to do.i dont have a very good gpa so please advice on how bad things are going to be for me.i have a toefl score of 275 out of 300.i worked as a dental assistant here for 9 months and am getting reco letters from them too.
please let us know what else is needed
thank you
sreshti

Everytime I read this International Forum, I read that you guys "give" the exam?! Just so you all know, in the U.S. here, we "take" exams and we do not "give"!

For example:

I will be "taking" the NBDE Part 1 this upcoming December 2003!

I "took" the NBDE Part 1 this past July 2003.

I thought I share, if you all want to practice in the U.S. and interact with our fellow colleagues, it is very important for you all to learn the correct grammer and learn the proper way to communicate.

We DO NOT "give" exams unless we're faculty members teaching classes or working for ADA administering the NBDE Part 1 examinations.

If you're a candidate, then you "take" an exam and NOT "give"! I realize that you all are from foreign countries and probably use English by direct translation from your native language, I simply want you all to know that it sound extremely ackward to hear when you all say I "give" the Part 1 this past July.......

No offense, just trying to help!

hi, thanx for the 'give and take ' bit. will definately keep it in mind. also agree that july ndbe 1 was not partcularly easy. just need to keep fingers crossed.

sanju

hi ek_dds,
i'm planning to apply to BU and NYU too.that is my scores allow me. not very hopeful.all the best for the results. have you given your toefl?

hi shreshti,
regarding illinois, a friend of mine doing the certificate program there told me that to apply for the IDP crtificate program, one needs to either be a US citizen or a permanent resident or need a proof from the INS that you have applied for permanent residency. but i think you should call them up and reconfirm. all the best.

sanju

Hi Sanju,

I have taken the toefl exam and have the adequate and am considering a few others as well.Though I would love to apply for LLU the requirement of Part
2(LLU always says that part 2 is not required but if you have ur preferred) is pretty impossible for me in my present situation.

Time is obviously running out as sep 15 is the last date.
Goodluck.

Hi Sreshti,
You are in a better position than most of us.Work experience helps as I understand as the Interview committee usually looks for interaction with American society, make sure your recos talk of that.

My GPA is very bad as well,so if thats teh case, try WES and apply to those which so accept them.Sometimes gpa really doesnt matter after you get the interview call that is.
(But our credentials obviously need to be fine for us to get the call.Hence Im going ahead with wes)

Ok goodluck everyone.
Lets Fight on!

Hi! it's not just in the US that people 'TAKE' exams it's everywhere that one 'TAKES' and not GIVES the test .This is the only appropriate word for this phrase, and if one thinks about it ,the only word that makes sense.thanks!!!!

hi sanju,
thanks for the reply.i did call up idp admissions office in chicago.they told me that its not an eligibility requirement to be a citizen or a gc holder but they prefer them first.they are giving out applications from the first of next month.
i wanted to talk about the pros and cons of taking up this programme compared to the advanced standing.do u have any idea about the ms programmes being offered to international students?the results would be out by the month end.i want to know the list of universities giving out their applications right now.do let me know as soon as possible
thank u
sreshti

hi ek_dds,
thanks a lot for your suggestion.i will defly consider what u told.the only problem is that a lot of schools havent asked us to get our evaluation done by the wes.plz let me know which schools accept those.i will wait for ur reply
bye now
sreshti

hi ek_dds,
that's a great score for toefl.do you live on the east coast. i'm in virginia.do you knoe whether pittsburgh or tufts conider your appln before part 2.

hi shreshti,
thanx for the info. it is a relief that there is one more school to apply to. well, about MS verses an advanced standing DDS program, it all depends. personally i feel, if you are here for good it is always better to do the DDS program as after that you can either take up a job or do post-grad. with a MS degree one cannot work and it also costs almost equal to the DDS progr. but if you plan to go bac to india in a few years a post grad degree from here would surely do you good. hope this info helps.

sanju

Hi Sanju,

I do live in the east coast-Ny.
Just read a thread that says u need 90+ in part 1 and 85+ for part 2 for tufts. So Im not applying to these universities anyways.

and By the way I never told my Toefl score. That was shresti with a 275.

goodluck.

Hi Sreshti,

To my knowledge Nyu,Bu and LLU accept WES.
Im trying to find out about the rest.
And please tell me how do u approach a dentist for an assistant job, like the one you are doing and do u get paid for it?
Thanx in advance
goodluck.

hi sanju,
we have to look out in the ad columns for the jobs and send a resume to a dentist.they will call you if they like your resume.thats what i did to get a job as a dental assistant.
he does pay me too and i am happy with it as its more than enough to support myself i a comfortable way.
please let me know how to prepare reco letters and are there any sites or it would be of great help if u could show mw a formatted one.my email id is [email protected]
hope to see a mail from you at the earliest possible
sreshti

hi shresti
i presumed from ur replies that u dont have a gc or a citizenship,if u dont have a legal working visa is it possible to work,do the doctors really look into that before they hire?no offence here i was just wondering from my situation without a legal working visa can i get hired anyway and get paid if not initially eventually.ur reply will be appreciated.as of now i am without any work.

You have to be a citizen or at least hold a green card to work as a dentist legally and no one will ever hire anybody to work illegally as a dentist nor should they.
The other choice i think is to have the employer apply for a work visa for you but i'm not sure how that works

In Canada we "write" rather than "take" exams. When I was at marquette, my classmates used to look at me crosseyed when ever I would use that expression. C'mon how can an american not figure out what I was saying.

By the way, we get "marks" and not "grades".

I took Ndb 1 in July of 2000 and recieved my results the last week in August before school started (around Aug. 25).

this is for shilpi
hey shilpi
i have a work permitt on my visa and hence got employed.i understand u are on a h4 or something which does not permit to work.u could mail me at [email protected] we could discusss about this
sreshti

hey guys
i was suprised to know that the deadline for columbia university is over and we cannot join the session in 2004.which other universities in newyork are available for the year 2003?i would appreciate any response at the earliest
sreshti

Completed applicn
Evaluation from ECE
Curriculum Vitae
Reco letters
Toefl Scores
NDBE Scores

can anyone think of anything that i might have missed out?

soo scary ....keep on waiting everyday for the mail !!!! hope the results r out before the long weekend .

normally they specify that the nbde 1 results wud be out within 6-8 weeks, but last year, for the dec 2002 exam it took a little more than 8 weeks for the results to be out.

Dear Foreign Doctors:

Be sure to post your NBDE Part 1 results in the following thread ONLY when you receive them (DO NOT post anything in this thread at this time):

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79827

I wish you all the best as we can do nothing now but accept the scores that we deserve and have earned.

Hi everybody,
the waiting time is taking a toll on me.I cannot wait to get the results whether they r good or bad.
by the way, anyone starts prepering for part 2 and how to do it.

Thanks

Hi every one, I am a newbee to post but i am not new to the forum thou.... I called ADA and got the same answer from them as some one posted that results will be out by Sep 12th mailed and will be in mail box with in 2 to 3 days depending on how close you live to Chicago.

One dump question not to panic you guys....
Some one told me that the high scores are mailed on the first day and later you go the scoring goes down. Do any one know if this is TRUE?

Good Luck.

called up ada too and found that the results will be out by september mid-week. quite confusing why it takes so long when it is said that the results are generally out by 6-8 weeks.
anyone recieving results before september mid-week, please update the matter. thanks.

What exactly is "September mid-week"?

Do you mean September mid-month (middle of September)?

🙄

Yah e, why are you so hard on the foreign docs english? I've noticed a couple of your posts are borderline offensive. I have friends (former classmates) who were not native english speakers, and I applaud them for being able to learn a second language. English, especially is one of the most difficult languages to learn - Not to mention taking a test such as NDB 1, in a language other than your native.

to be more clear, I meant ," the middle week of september".

Rob: No offense intended, just correcting. It's interesting that you're offended though. FYI, English is also my second language and I beg to differ that English is "one of the most difficult language to learn"! Try Chinese!

Spund: What exactly is "middle week of September"? September is a month, not a week. Were you trying to say, middle of the first week of September or middle of the second week of September? Your phrase is still very confusing after "to be more clear"!

😱

I am not offended, but others might be. Yes, you are probably right, I would not want to learn chinese!

I also think depending on what age you learn a second language will affect how "grammatically" profiecient you become. I am just guessing but you were born in the US - had parents who spoke chinese to you as an infant, so now you are bilingual. I am just guessing, but I have many friends that were brought up like that except with Italian. I think there is a big difference between that scenerio and an immigrant.

If I am wrong about your situation then I applaud you, because you write english very well.

Yah- E,
I do not see any reason why u should still be confused. The answer lies in ur question itself. September is a month and not a week. When u know September is a month with the first, second, third, and fourth week in it. what do u think should the middle week be? Inspite of this if u still feel confusing, I suggest u call the ADA to clarify ur query.

just to set the records straight it should be "languages" in a sentence typed by someone trying to correct anothers grammar.

english is not my native language either!

lets all try to be more accepting of how people speak/post here. we do type and post after we have studied for ages and are all stressed out. its important that we communicate and help each other - not find fault. everyone agree with me?

hey yahee i think u should go and see the calender or find out the no. of weeks a month has and also search the english dict. wht does the middle of a month mean

Spund:

FYI, here in the U.S. if you're refering to the 2nd or 3rd week of a month, then the following statments would make sense:

1) Within the two weeks in mid September....

2) In the middle of the month in September....

When you typed "September mid-week", it was ambiguous! Since September has 4 weeks as we all know, your "September mid-week" can be refering to any of those 4 weeks!

I completely understand what you were trying to say in your original unclear statment, but I offered to correct you so you're able to communicate more effectively in the future. Whether you accept it or not, it's up to you. If you were offended by it, then again it's up to you. Just like the "take" and "give" exam scenario, we simply don't say "I give the exam in July!"

Fulldenture:

I know what "middle of September" means, but do you know what "September mid-week" means? Oh by the way, if I would've looked in the English Dictionary, I wouldn't be able to find the phrase "middle of the month" since it's 4 words together.

Listen, I choose to correct and help people as I see fit. If you take an offense by it, then I can't help that. I never called anyone an idiot or stupid or anything so it's not like that I was rude.

If someone would've posted/typed incorrect information about the Dental Decks, topics in NBDE, topics in OMS/MD residency, and/or about my school, I would've corrected them in the same manner. I simply tried to offer and correct your ambiguous statement so people can understand you better.

I'm done in this thread.

Hi ,
I have been noticing for some time now,how Yah-E has been going on about the correct use of language.is this forum abt learning correct grammar?i think it is abt sharing each other's doubts ,worries and anxieties. As long as anyone can put into words these sentiments and others can understand, there is no need to worry.if he continues like this ,people will get scared to post anything.
as he says ,he is well within his rights to post anything he wants.it is true that all his comments were correct.but how would he feel if someone points out every little error he makes ,when he is trying to communicate something?probably he would say, that is the correct thing to do.sadly, everyone do not think alike.so it is good manners and a sign of maturity not to ridicule or hurt someone.
Thanks dr rob for ur support and understanding.u r a very sensitive person.considering all these verbal wars that r going on,sensitivity is a virtue that is fast disappearing.
now i am worried abt what mistakes he will find with this post.do spare me....

🙄

Hey guys,

I think Yah-e is not tryin to offend any of us. n maybe we shud take it more positively,
if u are planning to live n settle in usa, then there is no harm in trying to understand the differences.

itsme

Let us give a new flavour to the thread....

Can you tell which paper was most difficult and rank each paper between 10 to 1, 10 being the most difficult and 1 the most easy.

Oral Anatomy
Physio/Bio-chem
Anatomy
Micro-path

Good Luck..

Hi everybody,
the waiting time is taking a toll on me.I cannot wait to get the results whether they r good or bad.

People,
I guess the wait is stressing all of you out. Anyway why nitpick on the words we are dentists not lawyers.
Further, as far as my school is concerned, they told us that because some of the students took up the trial computer based version of the test, there might be a delay in the results coming out.
When I am not very sure of.
Hope that was marginally useful.
saravs
ps, I hope people will excuse any grammatical/spelling errors.

I called the NBDE today. They told me that they will start mailing the results on the 11th or the 12th of september.

I hope atleast that this time they are truthful...

itsme is soooo right. The guy was just trying to help. At least he didn't insult us. I know we (foreign dentists) don't always know to express ourselves in english, but we should try our best, and avoid writing nonsense stuff like "september mid-week".

We should also avoid writing MOST words in a phrase in abbreviation, such as "ur" for your, "n" for and, "r" for are, "abt" for about, etc. When a paragraph has many words shortened, it's hard to read at first glance. Noticed I said "most" words, not any word, I know is easier and quicker, but is uncomfortable to the reader when there are many of them. And this is a trend I see extremely often by some users of this international forum.

So let's not get self-conscious about our english skills, and leave the guy alone, he wasn't rude and is always trying to help others.

I totally agree with U (ooops ). Sometimes it becomes so difficult that I just skip it.
