HI SDN. I was wondering who is taking the DAT in June ? Where are you in your studies? Are you doing practice tests already or still going over some information?

I'm planning to take my exam end of June. I finished Chem, Bio and going over Orgo second time. Im trying to do 3 PAT tests a week and 1 reading test a week ( thou it should be more). I have been doing bio destroyer and
Chem destroyer to keep the topics in my head fresh. I try going over my index cards for bio but get extra bored so I do more questions instead. My wall is covered with index cards of concepts that are hard for me. Also I have not started math which I feel really guilty about.
Any advice or critique ? Please share where you guys are.

Mine's June 24th. Your in a better situation then me...I still have about 1.5 weeks of review, and that will allow me about 3 weeks of practice tests. Also, I am learning orgo from scratch, That's why my review took so long b/c I have spent most of my time focusing on that subject. I have barely started math and not started PAT yet. I HATE studying for bio, even though I like the subject. Can't stand Cliff's...so boring. Flashcards are my best friend for that and, well, really all the sciences.

I'm taking mine on June 7th. I haven't done any full length test just done the destroyer and chads quizzes :/ I doing my first one tomorrow with Kaplan. I haven't really paid much attention to RC or PAT though which is kind of freaking me out. I've come up with a schedule for the final two weeks and that's when I'll be doing the stuff that I've left behind. Good luck and let me know how it goes!!!

Mine's June 2nd. I'm taking this weekend somewhat light (half-days), and then cranking it up to 11 on Monday. I've done 5 Bootcamp exams and am purchasing Qvault Bio and Qvault Math, just so that I can have practice with more problems. I have the ADA 2009 Test coming in sometime today, which I'll take next Thursday (my exam is not next Monday, but the one after it). I started going over Destroyer a second time, and got halfway through it, but I'm probably just going to shift over and just do randomized tests from Bootcamp on Gen Chem and Orgo, as I feel they will probably be more representative of what I get on the real deal (I might actually just keep doing Orgo on Destroyer, but Bootcamp Gen Chem seems to really pick up on the types of problem I will see on the actual DAT).

I'm taking my last Bootcamp exam on Tuesday, then probably the 2009 ADA exam on Thursday and then the 2007 Exam either on Friday or Saturday. I know people say to take the last day or two off, but I know myself and I suck when I go into exams cold. I know the 2007 one is easier than the real thing, so hopefully it'll be a nice little confidence boost. Sunday I'll probably just watch Youtube videos/skim concepts for stuff I'm not sure on.

Mine is the 24th too!! Yeah I'm still in the reviewing stages unfortunately. My goal is to start the destroyer on Tuesday but we'll see if that actually happens. Bio is definitely going to be my downfall. It is SO DULL to study. It's my major but I've always been SO much better at chemistry.
I unfortunately have to basically take a week off of studying the first week of June for weird reasons so I'm starting to get really concerned I don't have enough time 🙁

You guys are all doing great I'm just stressing because this will be my second time taking it. I also have 2 kids so I'm a full time mom first. I want to say that even though I finished with chem and Bio I still don't feel like I know it 100%, but hopefully by taking practice tests my confidence will boost up.

Don't stress. That's the last thing you should do. Just keep a positive attitude towards it and no matter what don't look at it as failure. I completely understand on the time and managing kids :/ I have a full time job and then my family which sometimes make me feel exhausted before I even start studying but just push yourself.. this is the last leg. 🙂 PS: As the Dr that I work for said... "you will NEVER feel prepared for this exam but have faith in yourself and keep a positive attitude and you will do fine" BEST OF LUCK EVERYONE AND JUST BREATH ^.^

Yes, that would be extremely helpful once I get to the bio 2 stuff. That's where I'm really bad! I can relate to the struggle of trying to fit studying in between being a mom. I have an 11 month old (who is teething, btw :wacky:) and it's killing me spending all my time studying and missing out on most of his day. But, that has definitely a motivating factor as well, though, bc once im done with this test, i'll have a pretty easy summer B and can rest before fall semester and spend some time with him!

Good advice! I love knowing I'm not the only one balancing all this! Do you guys have help with the kids so you can study? Luckily, my mom has been watching my son while I study but I think she's starting to go mad lol (she's older)

I JUST rescheduled my exam for June 8th...I have about 2 weeks to review, take a few practice exams, and attempt to go through Destroyer a second time. I am contemplating getting Topscore or Achiever for the practice exams; does anyone have a preference?

- Chad's Videos O Chem/G Chem: He is kind of freaking AMAZING! Relearned 2 years of classes in 2 weeks!
- Feralis Notes: Only skimmed these...WAY TOO DENSE but covers everything to a T
- Kaplan: Honestly, Kaplan was a waste of money. But it forced me to finish the program and I still refer to the books when needed
- DAT Destroyer: I heard Destroyer is representative of the actual DATs, I've also heard it's too hard on certain subjects? Either way, Destroyer exposes you to as many types of questions, which is critical in the sciences (especially bio...).
- Crack DAT PAT: I use this when I have time and need a break from the sciences. Will take a few more exams intermittently in the next 2 weeks.
- DAT Bootcamp: I believe this is a fairly new program/test prep but IT'S AWESOME!!! I strongly recommend it because you get 5 practice exams and the answers/explanations are some of the easiest to understand. Also, if you have any questions, you contact Ari (who is a current dental student at Columbia??) and he will email you back with feedback within a day or two. I had to wait over a week while using Kaplan for answers to questions! There isn't a lot of reviews/feedback on Bootcamp so if you're interested, PM me and I can share my experiences. Plus you can test them out: 1 free practice exam on their website! And their PAT question generator is so awesome (you have a timed option to practice speed, which is critical when doing 90 questions in 60 minutes...)

The 3 sections I'm worried about are Bio, O Chem, and QR. Bio is just a craps shoot with what you'll be tested on. O Chem I hear is "easy" because they can only test you on so many things; I just struggle with remembering all the reactions. I ALWAYS run out of time in QR. I have yet to finish the exam without having to literally guess the last 4 questions in 30 seconds...

Yup, I study during the day too. I always stop at 5 to go home, feed him dinner, hang out and put him to bed. Sometimes I get back to it after he falls asleep but, honestly, not too often! By then, I'm usually done lol. So nice to have someone helping out. Don't know how I'd do it without my mom's help

How is everyone doing with PAT? I have a little over 5 weeks to go and still haven't really touched it. Did it take you guys a while to pick up, or do you think the time I have is doable? I have crack the DAT...

June 24th here! I've only been studying for 2 weeks and am starting to hit that road block. Like everyone else it seems, I'm a little nervous for Bio. As for PAT, I've been spending maybe like 15-20 minutes a day on DATBootcamp's angle ranking generator. I've done a few CDP exams and it's definitely "clicked" though timing is still an issue. I used DATBootcamp's free first exam (PAT Section) to get a feel for the section and for tips and strategies.

Crack DAT PAT is great! I honestly think the best way to study for the PAT is repetition. I get 0-1 questions wrong for angles, hole punching, cube counting, and folding but TFE and keyholes will be my demise...while there are strategies to these, I think practice is the only way you get comfortable seeing these questions and answering in the fastest manner possible.

Ziggy, if I were you, I would do a little bit every day, even if for just 15-20 minutes a day. It gets you consciously thinking about those problems and like I said before, PAT is all about practice. Even if you learn new strategies and techniques for PAT, you have to be efficient with it.

For example, in the cube counting section, I tried a strategy where you count and tally the # of faces for each cube. It takes a lot of time (over a minute to count all the cubes systematically) yet is quite accurate. BUT, I found that I am pretty good at cube counting and can just count out the cubes that have a certain # of faces. Saves me way more time and I still only miss 0-1 cube questions out of 15.

Also, DAT Bootcamp has angles/holes/cube generators that you can get in that practice!

Yep, bio is....yea.... >.<

Not sure if this is a pattern for the current DAT, but I've been on 3 SDN posts of people who have recently taken the DATs and they all mentioned 3-4 questions on phyla/taxonomy. Perhaps that's something we can really focus to raise our score? 😉

I love the tally strategy it takes a while but 99% accurate I totally depend on it.

Ziggy deff start with PAT it will seem overwhelming at first but then you'll get into it.

June 29th here, I'm still in content review and have barely touched up on BIO (have only read ~9 pgs of Feralis notes). Like Ziggy said I find myself uninterested when I pick up the material because its so dense and dry :/. Chad's GC and OC videos are awesome and so are his quizzes (halfway done with reviewing). Dat Bootcamp is amazing for PAT and while it seems impossible at first I feel that it gets better as you get more exposure to it.

I feel as if I'm behind though. When do you guys think I should start doing Destroyer problems and practice tests?

I am learning orgo from scratch too :/ ....I just finished reading orgo chem as a second language 1....I still need to read orgo chem as a 2nd language 2... God knows how am I gonna be able to understand and memorize all these new concepts. What materials are you using for orgo? Orgo chem as a second language is really good and breaks everything down in simple words, you should try it if you are having trouble with anything 🙂

I'm June 17. Will be done with all content review Sunday. Taking my first practice exam Monday. Then 50 questions/day of each of the sciences from Destroyer/bootcamp, full length Math Destroyer exam every other day, PAT on non-math days from bootcamp/Crack DAT, debating whether to study for RC at all.

Honestly, I have no idea how one can learn orgo from scratch and do well on this exam. Chad's videos make a ton of sense after having taken both semesters, but I'm not sure I'd be able to follow that closely if I weren't already well-acquainted with the material.

Full time dad of two kidren, full time student (13 credits this summer), full time employee. It's a lot, but you can do whatever you put mind to - go get it!

My good friend just took the MCAT and gave the same advice. You will never feel completely prepared, because there is just too much to know. But, this is a hurdle that everyone has to face - so you just prepare as much as you can.

Honestly, it hasn't been too bad. Well, the material itself, anyway. I've actually picked it up much quicker than I thought I would, but I think it's because of the no math thing (I really hate math!!) BUT, it is taking me forever to get through everything. I planned out 10 weeks to study and now, with 5 weeks to go, i've prety much only focused on orgo, mixed with some bio and gen chem. I literally study orgo for 8-9 hours a day and I still havn't gotten heavy into rxns. However, I am through with (most of) orgo as 2nd lang. 1 and into Chad's vids now, so those are rolling pretty smooth and hopefully i'll be done with the learning part soon and can focus on practice tests.

Yes, I also read orgo as 2nd lang 1, I ordered the 2nd semester but not really sure if I should waste my time at this point. I just reached a point where I just couldn't read a book anymore and had to move on to Chad's. I got to chap. 9 in orgo as 2nd lang. Did you finish the whole thing? Once I got to mechanisms, I feel like he really didn't explain well and I was lost. But, the book was a god-send. Really helped with all the basics and allowed me to pick up on Chad's vids easily. I'm also using (haven't started yet) Org chem odyssey, DAT destroyer, and bootcamp. How much time do you have left before the test?

Why are you using Ferali's notes (no offense, Ferali)? I found it more helpful to just read over Cliff's, myself, than to read someone else's notes.

I also read Cliff's but from what others have said about Feralis' notes is that it covers pretty much everything in a summarized format.

Oh...hmmm I just opened the links and they all worked...I think the cube generator may be only for those who are enrolled in DAT Bootcamp? Can anyone else test out the link to see if they can access it without Bootcamp?

For me, I think Destroyer helped once I had a foundation for all the sciences, especially for Gen Chem and O Chem. Without some exposure to the reactions or gen chem concepts, I would have no idea what the explanations mean. But once you have even a basic understanding, I would start of Destroyer right away. Even just a few dozen questions a day...really gets you in "test" mode. I am not the first to admit that I am NOT a genius...I can't pick up material after reading it once, I need repetition and A LOT OF IT! The more you are exposed to questions, the more comfortable you are and you become aware of how questions are worded.

I was hoping to get through the whole thing in 2 weeks...took about a month! But I went over the answers thoroughly and watched Chad's videos. I'm redoing Destroyer in my last 2 weeks so hopefully I can get through it in just 2 weeks the second time around!

I'm studying RC just to get a feel for the question types. For example, they have stupid "Statment is ____, reason is ______" questions that I didn't understand how to do for the first three tests... Got 20's on the first 3 Bootcamp tests and after the third one, I finally realized what they were asking for... Got a 25 on the next one, which made more sense to me (I read A LOT, so the 20's were kinda upsetting).

Don't be overwhelmed! 5 weeks is plenty of time to study, you just have to be efficient with your time! You can do it 😀

Think of PAT as fun brain puzzles that will allow you to take a break from the sciences. And just do a little bit at a time, no rush. As long as you do a little bit everyday, I think that will be WAY more beneficial than holding it off the last 2 weeks. Even if you do only 10 minutes a day or just a few rounds on the random generators, you become better, more comfortable, and faster!

OMG ME TOO!! Those questions were really confusing for me but I also figured out what it was asking. If both "parts" are correct, even if one is not necessarily a "statement" or a "reason", then the answer is that they're both correct but not related. That took me FOREVER to understand...been getting 18's but finally got a 23 on my last RC. :]

omg I feel exactly the same way!! I was doing very well in the earlier chapters and understanding everything...but like after chapter 9, I think, it starts getting weird...like where there is empty pages for us to draw reactions and stuff..I kinda lost it there..so I switched to Chad and other youtube videos to understand it better(btw also try leah4sci on youtube, she is pretty good at tutoring orgo)...but honestly so far orgo isn't THAT bad as I thought it would be. I did buy destroyer but I feel like destroyer has more than what we need to know. Bootcamp is my next practice material after I finish this book and chad's videos. I am also debating if I really do need to go through all of orgo for 2nd semester. My exam is in 5 weeks....My main issue is that I am having a hard time remembering everything I reviewed, like when I finish reviewing one subject and move on to the next one I feel like the first subject I already reviewed is starting to go away from my memory and I am gonna have to do it all over again 🙁

Heyyy you just mentioned in one of your quote that " you can get anything you put your mind into" so orgo should be no big deal 😉

Yup, those blank pages is exactly where I got lost as well! I'm also 5 weeks out and definitely getting nervous...what I've been doing to make sure I don't forget what I've learned in previous chapters is I go through my notes each day before I start studying, even just briefly to remember the content. It takes some time and kinda sucks, but I found if I don't, it's like you said: I'll forget everything and have to re learn it.

Well, orgo is a bear. Not saying it's impossible, but it certainly would make the task more difficult.

How is everyone doing? Has anyone taken it yet? If not, where are you at? I'm finishing up destroyer now (looks like i'll only be able to complete it maybe 1.5x) took the 1st free tests on bootcamp.com. Just plugging away...can't wait to have this behind me 🙂 Hope you're all doing good!

One week until D-Day [DAT Day 😉] . I'm at the point where I just want to get this thing over with, I've gone from 8hrs+/day to around 4-5 hours a day this past week. Anyone else feeling this way? Best of luck to those of you who are taking it this week.

I pushed mine back to July 7. Got nervous 🙁 I'm also to the point where I'm ready to get it over. I've gone from 8 hours/day to about 6.

Yup, feeling the saaaame way. It's horrible, I've been doing 8-12 hour days and today, I couldn't get the motivation to study at all. Ended up in a youtube trance instead lol. Gotta finish strong, though. Almost there!

Mine is also on the 24th. Starting to feel panicky because I'm getting consistent 18's and 19's on pretty much every section of bootcamp other than QR (somehow I'm scoring really well in QR)
Rescheduling isn't much of an option because I start work on the 25th... hopefully I can pull myself together in the next few days :scared:

I'm also in the 19 range on bootcamp, except RC and bio. Honestly I'm pretty OK with that. I'm just really worried about orgo and math! But, like you, I really can't push my test back, too much stuff going on summer B. Just gonna make the most of this week and take it!
