Hello all! I'm new to this forum, just signed up today. Throughout the years, I've always been interested in music and I am an accomplished classical musician for my age. Having played in Carnegie Hall and other venues around NYC I really has a passion for it. Now as a junior in high school, I am so interested into pharmacy and my aspirations to be one are so high. I am going to be very straight forward and honest, and would like your opinions the same way. I really have only been an average student in Science/math. Not the most advance...I'm in chemistry this year (grade 11) and I just want to know if I have any chance of making it at St. John's (Queens, NY). I love the school and campus, and just everything about it. I am such a hard worker and can motivate myself to do anything. I only get B's in science and math, and I'm so uneasy and depressed that I ruined my chances to do anything else but music with my life. I really love St. John's (0-6 year program) and would love to go their. Please any feedback is greatly appreciated.

i wouldnt recommend music as a career to anyone. and the same goes for pharmacy these days.

sorry not familiar with 0-6 programs, my undergrad only took 5 years haha

Start a rapport with the school. Call or email the admissions office and see what you can do to better tailor yourself to their program.

Probably the best and easiest way to go about it.

You're far too young to have "ruined your chances to do anything else but music" with your life. By the 11th grade, you still have time to learn and study much more science and math and improve your grades. St. John's isn't the only pharmacy program out there. Most of them (the non 0-6 programs) will never *ever* see your high school grades or your SAT scores. There is plenty of time if pharmacy is what you really want to do.👍

I currently actually attend St. John's University (as a pre-med undergrad though, not the pharmacy program). However I did get into the 6 year pharmacy program with a half scholarship. If you want I can tell you my stats when I applied, as well as the stats of many of my friends who got into the pharmacy program.

89.9 High School GPA. 2350 on SAT - Got in with half scholarship to the pharmacy program.

Friends:
91.2 High School GPA. 2080 on SAT - Got in with 8k/year scholarship to the pharmacy program.

92.3 High School GPA. 2110 on SAT - Got in (dont know what scholarship)

90.4 High School GPA. dont know SAT - Got in.

You get the idea. However, I am not sure if this is true or not, but the St. John's representative who visited my high school said that St. John's "weighs" the GPAs from my high school since my school was a NYC specialized high school. He said that they add approx 6 points on the GPA from people from my high school. So if you go to bronx science or stuyvesant youre in luck (if he was telling the truth lol). I think he was though since even I, with my garbage GPA, got in.

On to your question about music. Trust me you didnt ruin any chances in your life lol. High school, quite frankly, means nothing really in where you go in life. I slept in all my classes in high school. However, now in college, where things REALLY matter, I give my complete effort. Nobody even mentions high school or would even know if i got straight D's back in high school. As long as youre willing to put in the effort in college+, where things kind of matter A LOT more, you'll be fine.

Also, let me tell you this - the St. John's pharmacy program is no joke if you even begin to slack off a little. To put things in perspective, they make you take General chemistry I and II in one semester, and Organic Chemistry I and II in the next semester (usually this takes two years/4 semesters to complete). Also, if youre kicked out half way you lose all the money you spent and are left with nothing - no PhD or even bachelor.

So in the end, if you put in the amount of time it takes for you to keep the 2.7 GPA to stay in the program, you'll be absolutely fine. Also, going into this program is only good if you are 100% sure you'll be happy as a pharmacist and dedicating many hours of studying to science. Are you passionate about pharmacy? Do you know anything about being a pharmacist? Do you know what being a pharmacist entails? I know you said that youre very interested in it, but i hope you know a lot about it to make this kind of decision. Becoming a PhD in something is not th same as becoming a cop or a teacher - it requires immense dedication.

So the advice I can give to you is to ace the SAT if you are that bent on joining St. John's Pharmacy and get straight A's this semester lol. Just make sure you are ready to lock yourself into becoming a pharmacist.

One last thing - if youre truly interested in being a pharmacist then you can become one by hook or by crook if you dont get into St. John's lol. Besides, St. John's normal undergrad is very easy to get into (at least in my opinion).

*Note: Long Island University in brooklyn has a 6 year program for pharmacy too I THINK.
