So i really want to know if i made the right decisions on my next year courses. I didn't do so good freshman year, and im want to finish sophomore year with good grades. So my GPA is horrible (2.0 or something). I know i can't become and Anesthesiologist with a GPA like that or get into a good college for that matter. So any help would be appreciated.

Main Courses 👎 ? 👍 ?
-AP English III - I actually like English, it's just my like of motivation for it
-AP US History - How did you not manage to fall asleep in this class... Lecture classes are the worse
-Anatomy and Physiology Honors - I have not a clue about the human body, so this would help me for the future right ?
-Advanced Functions and Modeling (AFM) - I'm horrible in math, so this class is basically the non honors version of pre-calc

First of all, don't worry about becoming an anesthesiologist right now; you are years away from that decision! However, you should focus on getting your GPA up and check out all your options for colleges. Your schedule for your junior year looks good; take the Anatomy and Physiology course to see if you're interested in that area of science, not because you think it will help you in the future-I promise what you take in high school will be overwhelmed by what you learn in undergrad, and in turn what you study in medical school will put everything else to shame.

As for the other classes, stay on track to be prepared for calculus in freshman year of college. If you have trouble staying motivated in the English and history classes, maybe try studying with a partner or try to the bulk of your homework in the library before you go home or something like that.

-Remember that what you do in high school really has no bearing on medical school admissions (unless you're aiming for one of those six year programs) Just focus on getting that GPA up for college admissions.

-Keep your options open as far as careers and potential majors. You have a lot of time before you need to decide where you're life is heading, and many people change their mind. That being said, some people are really set on a particular field so research the process of becoming a doctor and read up on the medical field to see if it's for you (this website is a great start!).

Your high school GPA is not going to effect you becoming an anesthesiologist. The higher your undergrad GPA, the better chance of getting into a more prestigous school, high GPA at a prestigous med school = good chance of getting matched to competitive residency.

So the only thing not having an extremely high GPA in high school is going to effect is you won't be going to an ivy if you know what I mean. Your classes look good, and it's not too late to study your butt off to become what you want to be. Good luck😛

High school GPA does not matter, period. It matters to undergrad schools, but keep in mind that you do not need to go to Harvard to get into a medical school.

+1

Go to a good state school (the lower the tuition the better) and rock it. Get a 3.7+ GPA, do well on the MCAT, and have some ECs. Have fun and enjoy life. You'll get into med school.

The only reason you would even need to worry about your GPA is if you were applying to combined BS/MD or BS/DO programs...which I'm pretty sure won't be the case. I would only worry about going into a state school and making sure you don't mess up there, because otherwise your highschool GPA means absolutely nothing.

Hello.
I will be a junior next year as well; if your school is anything like mine, AP classes are weighted (for example, making an A counts as a 5.0, B as a 4.0, and so on). Unless you're willing to commit yourself to work hard, do not take AP classes. If you've taken any yet, you've probably realized that they are more difficult than honors courses, not because of the difficulty of the material, but because the information is piled on you.

Echoing the thoughts of others, high school GPA does not matter in the medical school admissions process. Worry more about getting into the right college for you and about covering the classes that will prepare you well for pre-medical studies so you can get the GPA needed for medical school.

Also, many physicians and medical students on these forums stress that you will probably not know the specialty you want until you're finally there in clinical rotations in medical school. At this point, it seems the common advice would be to get excited about being a physician of any sort, not of just one specialty.

Class of 2012 😎
